I currently have power steering sharing one belt with the water pump, then alternator on it's own belt. I am converting to manual steering, and will lose that belt. How do I get the water pump to turn with the alternator as the "adjuster"? I assume I need a different water pump pulley? If so, part numbers? Or can I just go to Autozone and ask for a water pump pulley (or full pump) from a manual car? I have no problem buying an aftermarket hi-performance water pump while I am at it... It could never hurt with the heat we have down here. Again, if that is a recommendation, part numbers, etc...
My best guess is you need to get a water pump pulley from a non power steering car. Do you have any pics of how the belts are currently routed? Sounds like a good time to go to a serpentine belt to me...
Like Jamie said .. you will need the pulleys for a no-PS and I assume no-Air car so they will be single groove.... you can buy aftermarket pullleys from auto parts stores ... I used a March set to do exactly what you are doing .... I didn't have the time to fool around with getting the correct factory pulley's ...
An electric water pump is an option you could look into since you are concidering upgrading it anyway. Then the belts are a non-issue. Plus you free up a few ponies!
Good luck finding any stock pulleys... I never did. I ran my alternator farther back for a while, but it's not a good setup long term. I'm ready to give up and just buy the March pulleys for single belt setup.
If you intend to use stock pulleys, then the single lower and matching WP pulley is the set you need. There were MANY made on MANY different Fords, but everyone I know grabs them up when they find them, so they can be scarce unless you are the first person to come upon a set.
all you need to do is unbolt your alternator, move it to the other side of the engine bay. i used the same bracket for the alternator, just flipped it over. some very minimal grinding was necessary to clear the valve cover, but its a gravy fit. i had to bend the original p/steering lower adjustment bracket to fit.if i can get my crappy digital camera working ill snap a few photos, but all in all its really easy, and free.
wages, Please, pictures would be greatly appreciated. I never thought of (something as simple as...) moving the alternator As long as I have room for my centrifugal blower later on, I don't care what is under the hood :bananaman
ill do what i can, but really, if ya have time, just unbolt the alternator. hold it on the other side...it fits perfect. use the already there p/s lower banana bracket. just flip the alternator mount over. youll see its gravy. ill try and get some picks. youll need a new belt, of course, and to rewire the alternator leads so they reach. belt number is 11av1105...its a goodyear belt.
