Can we use the Auto Meter electric or mechanical speedometers with our cars? Also, if we can, how do they work? Where is the signal picked up from? ALSO, ALSO, can you calibrate the speedo after you have swapped out the rear gears (I have C4 with 3.80 gears)?
From Autometer FAQ's " Most Ford transmissions use a cable <that> pushes into the transmission and use a small retaining clamp to hold it in. For these models use a model # 5292 Auto Meter speed sensor. You will transfer the O-ring, speedometer gear and the gear retaining clip from the speedometer cable to the speed sensor, then install the sensor into the transmission." source:http://www.autometer.com/tech_faq_answer.aspx?sid=2&qid=43 calibration info: http://www.autometer.com/tech_faq_answer.aspx?sid=2&qid=40
Cool, thanks alot. I dug around their website a while, but couldn't find any decent info. I am thinking of making a new instrument cluster with all my gauges right there where the stock one were. But the speedo was the only thing stopping me...WAS
Also got good response from AutoMeter...(this is long, but should answer any questions for future interested people)
I'm still working on mine's. Me nor my buddies have a car that the wheels are not changed, so 2 miles I think is not 2 miles with larger tires. Its still off. So I unpluged the sender for right now & drive according to track flow. I can say they are not hard to wire up.
I would guess the best way to calibrate would be to drive on a highway or freeway that has the mile markers. That should get you close enough...
I've got one Scoop, I just got through installing one in my Ranger, it works great and very accurate. I measured it against my GPS unit. Its very easy to set up also. You just need the speedo and the pick up for the tranny.
