I dropped the pan on my C4 to change the filter and found this laying in it. Can't find anywhere it looks like it might have come from. This is the first time I've had the pan off a C4, so I'm a little lost. I personally think it don't belong in there, but hey, what do I know? :D I meant to add that it is a 77 C4 behind a 302 (didn't want to assume you'd notice my sig.) Any help?

almost looks like some sort of plug to put in the dipstick hole while the trans is being stored. I've been into 1 or 2 c4's and never seen anything like that.

    Not 100% sure

Hey guys, I'm not real sure what it's for, but I worked as a pitman at an oil change place for 2 years and saw quite a few in other trans pans that I worked on. Mostly fords, but some other makes also. We called a tranny shop and they said it is a plug of some sort that the factory installs before the trans is used for the first time. Hope that helps.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I'm going with the "it don't need to be in there" crowd. I didn't think it looked too important, but being my first time inside the tranny, I didn't want to have too many extra parts left over. :D I never figured my first tranny fluid change would be so challenging. :) BTW - the filter and pan were contained plenty of fibers from the bands -- probably time for a rebuild. Thankfully I didn't find any metal shavings or anything indicating a more severe problem. I suspect the extremely dirty filter may have been the reason the front pump sounded like it wasn't getting any fluid, but I'm sure the shuddering has more to do with the bands being worn. Should I go ahead and drain the converter while I am at it and see if things improve or just pull the tranny now and get the rebuild done?

    (Sorry for the huge post!)

The factory plugs the dipstick hole with that device. When the dipstick is shoved in it pushes it into the pan. You don't need to put it back. :)

I'd probably drain the converter while you are in there.
