Ok a few questions. Making a hot rod. Getting a 302. 1. Are there special headers I need to put on side pipes. 2. I am getting 9" Versailles rear end with disk brakes. I hear its a direct bolt on. Does it or can there be a posi div on it. 3. and what is the standard ratio for the Versailles? 4. What is the best gear ratio for a 302? I have heard differing things here. 3.75 and 3.25? or is it 3.17? Cant remember. 5. Car is currently a straight 6 with 3 on the tree. when I put in the 302 will the bellhousing bolt right on or do I need a new bellhousing and if I do do I need new flywheel. And how does that effect the clutch linkage. I have heard so many differing opinions on this I dont know what to do. 6. 302 motor mounts. I have heard the sixes mounts can be flipped and used to mount the 302. true or false. and lastly... Where the hell can I get a heater core for this thing !!! Thank you for ANY help you can give me
Run a search. Quick answers: a positive unit can be added to the rear in question gear ratio depends on what you do with car, and desired mpg better off making sure you get a bellhousing with a tranny intended for V8-JMO Linkage, flywheel etc. - get all of this from a V8 donor linkage should not be an issue in that case and, headers with sidepoops, oops I mean sidepipes. I guess you now know my as well as many other folks opinion on sidepipes. I would leave them on the curb. If you want noise, and that's about all they are good for, there are a wide selection of mufflers out there that will give you the noise you want. Seth
OK, here's my input. 1. nope. don't matter what header you use, you will have to have it made from the collector to the side pipes 2. & 3. I have said rear and mine came with 2:20 gears. Most came with highway gears, probably none better than 2:79. 4. Like Seth said, It depends on what you want to do. You'll have to be more specific with your intentions. 5. If your 6 is a 250, the bellhousing and flywheel will work on the 302. The 170 or 200 will not. You linkage can be modified to work but its cutting and welding type stuff. 6. You will need 302 motor mounts as well as the frame mounts and preferably, the trans frame mount. 7. Any good auto parts store can get a heater core.
more specific Ok as to the gear ratio, Iwanted more low end torque and off the line power but I didnt want to lose a lot of top end either. I heard 3.79 can be nerve racking as hell at speeds over 75 so I was more leaning to lower. What is it 3.17 or 3.01 or something I cant remember right off. As to sidepipes its not about performance or noise. I like the way the look, always have so... But other wise thanks. The reason I didnt go looking through everything is because currently I am in Iraq with the Army and dont have a great deal of interent time and I was hoping to get a few answers quickly and all together so thank you all. Anymore suggestions will be very helpfull.
Specifics OK about the gear ratio. I waslooking for some more off the line power but not so much I lose a lot of top end. I heard 3.77 and up is good off the line but you lose top end and its loud as hell, I wastold 3.01 or 3.17?? was decent what does every one think? As for sidepipes, it doesnt have anything to do with performance or noise. I just like the looks of them on Pony cars. MVHO I appreciate all your help. I would have searched for my own answers however I am deployed in Iraq and dont get a lot of time on the net so I washoping for down and dirty quick answers all at once. So keep the suggestions coming. Does anyone have aline on Flywheels and bellhousings for 302? And the Linkage fix and mounts, frame mounts and tranny cross beam?
if i remember right, jegs.com has a package that supplies you with flowmasters and all the pipes, clamps, etc.etc. for sidepipes. todd is leaning that way himself. as for all parts needed for v/8 swap, post in the "parts wanted" section here. somebody almost always has them sooner or later.
