Planning to swap out my intake and carb tomorrow, putting on an Edelbrock Performer 289 with Carter AFB. I bought the Edelbrock throttle relocation bracket because it was mentioned on another thread here that it's needed when using a Carter/Edelbrock 4-barrel. Does anyone have pics of the throttle relocation bracket installed on their vehicle? It didn't come with any diagram or instructions, and you'd think it'd be easy enough to figure out, but I'm not too bright sometimes.
I modded my old bracket too. and I use an Edelbrock. It's simple drilling. The intake came with a spare plate that made it easy.
Finally found the thread where I remembered seeing it mentioned, in one of the replies posted by "roadrage". http://www.maverick.to/mmb/showthread.php?t=6988&page=2&pp=20&highlight=carter+afb Next stupid question; when I removed the old intake, I found that the two small ports in the center (circled in pic below) are clogged up with a bunch of carbon and crap. What purpose do they serve, and should I attempt to clean them out somehow?
yeah just use your stock bracket or adapt the piece thats included in the box. as far as the other thing you talking about... with out even looking at your photo those are heat risers that help warm up the carb to activate the choke. if anything its a horse power killer. if you don't have a choke then block them off. get the fel pro gaskets the ones that come with heat riser block offs.
Thanks Derrick, already got the Fel-Pro gaskets The way the risers are gummed up I don't think they've been circulating for a long while....
PERSONALLY, I THINK IT'S EASIER TO LEAVE THE DISTRIBUTOR IN WHEN REMOVING THE INTAKE. THAT WAY, YOU DONT HAVE TO TIME EVERYTHING AGAIN IF YOU FORGET HOW YOU TOOK THE DISTRIBUTOR OUT
I marked the position of the rotor so it's all good...as long as it doesn't refuse to go down that last quarter of an inch. Thanks.
just be careful, i have read that if you spill the coolant into the engine, the combination of glycol antifreeze and oil makes some kind of acid that destroys bearings. i saw it here: http://remanufactured.com/Engine_Noise_Diagnosis_101.htm
Maple, on a lot of setups, those two ports are just plugged, which I guess yours were. If the head/gaskets had them plugged, they will appear "clogged" with crap, from the water hitting them and stopping, then dropping condensate. I would ignore them and continue on as you have. That clog is probably insignificant...some heads use those ports, some don't. Yours apparently do not.... Anyone want to disprove my theory??? When I swapped heads, I was told that those holes were for some kind of "cross something-or-other" to heat the heads up and supply warm air to the carb. I ignored it and had no problems since. I just put in the little chunk of gasket that fit in those hole, torqued down my heads, and drove away...
Got pics? In fact, I'd still like to see anyone's pics of their throttle cable setup using a Carter/Edelbrock. This is the last thing I need to hook up to complete the swap, and I'm getting anxious to drive my car...I must be the only guy here who can make a one day project take more than a week.
I don't have any pics of that side of the engine handy. I just bolted one hole from my original bracket to the edelbrock bracket and that to the engine. I drilled a hole in the edel bracket and used a bolt and nut.
I used the stock throttle cable bracket in additiion to the triangle shaped adapter that edelbrock includes with the intake ... works fine ....
Why would you need to modify it with a Holley? Mine required no modification whatsoever with my Holleys...
