    Hi all,
I am looking into the Trans problems on my sprint :16suspect and was wondering how hard it is to change a pump? I have never opened up a trans before and am a little scared about it. A friend of mine said I could change the pump to see if it wil fix the trans. The Car will pull some times but not all. I don't feel any slipping though. When its in its in. When it stops working the motor just revs (like i just put it in neutral) The Trans pump is making some whinning noise. I am sure the fluid has not been replaced at least for a very long time but it has no burnt smell. Any advise would be appreciated!!
    Thanks

For The Time, Effort And Price Between Replacing The Pump Vs. Replacing The Trans..... I'd Just Get A Good Used Trans And Put Back In It. If You Replace The Pump And It Doesnt Fix It, You'll Just Have To Take It Back Out Again.... Just My Thoughts

First, I would drain the pan and remove it, then replace the filter(be sure not to lose the small spring and valve directly under the funny looking tab on it). Refill with some type F fluid and give it a try. If it still is a problem, the whole trans has to be removed to change the pump. Is not extemely hard to do but there are some tricks to know so you don't lose internal parts and pieces when doing so. Try the fluid and filter first, then let me know if you need help in the pump removal procedure. Will save a lot of work if the filter is plugged causing low fluid pressure and some noise, the filter can be cleaned and reused if you have the proper equiptment such as air compresser and solvent tank, etc. Otherwise a new one can be had.

    Mean-MAv and Old GUY,
Thanks for the information. In the past I would have just pulled the tranny and found a new one but with the sprint i am trying to keep all the original parts.(I don't know why but I am) At any rate I will try the filter first. After that I guess it will need rebuilt.
    Thanks
