its a 72 maverick with 302/overdrive (aod) both out of a 85 f 150. the f 150 had an ECU but with a 2bbl factory. i thought computers were only for EFI. everything was working fine, other than dizzy probs. so he put a mallory uni lite on it and 4bbl (4300) and intake and now it only pulls in drive. and doesnt shift, takes off in 3rd and stays there. the car still has the ecu and there is a 4 wire sensor or selnoid on the drivers side the the trans that he had to unplug from the carb. is there a way he can take out the ecu but still use the trans? or cross the right wires to make it shift again? im no good with ecu's and just trying to help a neighbor with what was a fun maverick.
The ECU isn`t hooked up to the tranny at all , them four wires are just the nutral safty switch . Like mavericknutt said it sounds like you didn`t hook the "kick down rod" back up after the carb swap .
Sounds to me like one of those early throttle body injection setups Ford had at first. Looks like a 2 bbl carb, but has a couple of injectors at the top. My grandpa has an '85 Lincoln Town Car that is the same way.
"them four wires are just the nutral safty switch" i was told they have the "backup light" wire there also ... ...
Sounds to me that the tv cable is out of adjustment or not hooked up.If it doesn't have a cable it may be a rod or linkage.Looks like a old style kickdown likage. If this is not properly adjusted you will fry the trans in no time at all.For a baseline adjustment push the rod or if it is a cable pull to the end of it's travel hold the throttle wide open. The rod or cable shoud push on to the carb linkage with no extra travel. You may have to do some fabricating if the two linkages don't line up when they are both wide open, due to the fact that the carb being used wasn't ment to be with an aod trans.Derek.
On the AOD the "kickdown" rod is actually a throttle pressure adjustment. You need to make sure it is adjusted properly or the tranny will burn to a crisp.
Good point. I've heard too many horror stories about the TV Cable ("Throttle Valve"??) being out of adjustment and burning up the tranny.
