I won't win anything, if there is any contest. This is my first time to take my car anywhere that someone MIGHT look at it. Mine looks fine, if the hood is up. It is the body and interior that are currently under construction. Most people walk around my car with their nose and lip curled up, like it smells like a rotted animal carcass...then they see under the hood and they light up, like "WOW, what do you have SQUEEZED in there?"

Also, when I start it up, with open exhaust or with the caps on, it gets a pretty good response from on-lookers.

I have verified that it will HAVE to be a U-Haul trailer. There just isn't anything else around.

I am getting ammped...going to start working double-time to get some of the colors removed, and as much of the body straight and primered/POR-15'd as possible :bananaman

Well, Scotty, I can see you're dead set on the U-Haul 'em. No prob. :hail:

What would it take for you car to 'run cool'?

(Jeez, I just won't give up, will I? I just want you to be able to :drive: it there.)

Every time I do an "improvement" to my motor, it runs a little hotter, so I just assume the radiator cannot cool anything over the stock 110 HP (or whatever it is). So I have had to mess with thermostats, boiled the radiator out with muriatic acid, different fans, etc. etc. and it still wants to run hot after about 40 miles. It runs fine for 25-30 miles, depending on outside temps, then starts to slowly rise, maybe 2 degrees every 5 miles. When it hits 220, I pull over and let it cool down for a few minutes.

It runs fine in town, sits fine at red lights, and I can do short jaunts of 20-30 miles between redlights, and it runs fine, right at 180-190, just no highways longer than 30-40 miles without a cool down.

Plus, I have the A/C in the attic, and it will still be too hot for the wife in September.

I am pretty sure I need a larger AND aluminum radiator. I could probably benefit from a new brass one, but then I think I will hit the same problems when I go to rebuild to 347. So I am saving up...

Otherwise, the car is safe, sound, and legal for a drive that far.

If time doesn't permit getting the cooling problem done, then go for the uhaul. They have an autotransport that I was thinking about renting when I bring my mav down to San Diego. I'm not sure about the cost:huh:. I wouldn't want to drive with one eye on the road and the other on the temp!

Guys around here trailer their car, park about 3 blocks away, then drive into the show.

DeJacks, explain "autotransport"...pics would be helpful, as well. Never heard that term.

The U-Haul is about $50 per day after taxes, fees, etc. etc. So Friday night to Sunday morning is approx $100. I will do that in a second rather than worry about the temps.

Well I know uhaul has a tow dolly and an autotransport. The difference being, according to Uhaul, that the Maverick has to be towed backward on the tow dolly, otherwise your supposed to drop the drive line. With the autotransport you just drive the mav onto it, secure it and your off. Is that price for the dolly Scott?

My Mav broke down on the side of the road and I couldn't drive it up a transport, had no tools or a jack to get under it to remove the driveline. So me and a buddy PUSHED it backwards onto the dolly....PITA!

    Aaah, that is the autotransport...

I am renting that because I don't want to drag a spooled rearend behind on the ground, and why wear out your front tires by dragging them backwards if you can get all four wheels off the ground for $10 extra?

After I got my first REAL job (after Whataburger, Pizza Hut, and James Coney Island (a local hotdog stand)), I found that spending the extra $10 is WELL worth not having to worry about what is going on back there. Just kick on the radio, and forget the car is back there...

Do you think I might lose my deposit if I spray paint HOT PINK spray paint over all "U-Haul" emblems, just to cover them up for the weekend?

Wait...my wife suggested HOT PINK...I was thinking POR-15 Black :D

They should pay you for that! You're preventing rust on their trailer which will make it last longer! :D

You say the car is fine to drive, just not long distances. Why not find somewhere safe, such as a large parking lot, to park the truck and trailer and just drive the car a few miles to the show? No one would ever know you trailered it 98% of the way there.
