    motor and tranny together. (y)
Motor will not come out/in with the headers on....most of the time ;) but you can get motor/tranny up a little and take the headers off easier....and you can get the motor/tranny down most of the way and make reinstalling the headers easier.

i assume it's a 302? if so the headers need to come out and in through the bottom. if there hooker 6901's the passenger side should go right in and the driver side needs to have the engine jacked up a few inches. engine and tranny is the easiest. remember to drain the tranny. you'll still get tranny fluid out the rear when you lift it up. i usually put my oil changing stuff underneath.:)

I always pull the engine and trans together as well. Getting to bellhousing bolts can be a major PITA! I have to take my headers loose and tie them off to the side before hand though. For some reason I can never get the engine out with them bolted on.

any time i have ever put an engine and headers in at the same time I would tie them up to the side of the engine bay and drop the motor in, but then again most of the cars ive done that too had alot more room in the bay so i dont know how well that plan would work on a maverick. take the motor and tranny out at the same time, it hard enough to line the block up with the mounts not to mention the bellhousing too then try to get a wrench down between the firewall and the block and get the tranny bolted up

It's not just that either, if it's an auto, you gotta worry about getting the flex plate lined up with the torque converter as well! To me, it's well worth the extra 30 minutes or so it takes to undo the cross member and drive shaft and stuff.

Also, when pulling an auto trans, I have found it's way easier to disconnect the transmission cooling lines up at the radiator, and tie them to the side of the engine, rather then then trying to disconnect them back at the trans. Just gotta watch and make sure you don't snag them on anything as you lift the engine and pull it forward.

oh yeah, that damn torque converter lol. if you do have to undo the converter you can put a wrench over the front of the crank and spin it where you need it. If you take the plugs out it puts up less of a fight,
