Hi Guys, I have some questions to ask and maybe the answer is already here somewhere, but I plan on putting a 1989 5.0HO engine in my '70 Mav. I plan on running a carb instead of the EFI system. I know about the flexplate issue, but can someone briefly fill me in on some other (technical) things that I will need, or things other than the obvious (mounts etc). I just read something about needing an electronic fuel pump. I wanted to know if you still need this (for this motor) even if you go with a carb. Please help with all of the technical things I will need. I may just add a cam/lifters to engine and nothing else. Thanks!
You will need an electric fuel pump unless you want to go changeing out all the stuff on the front of the engine. The timeing cover on the fuel injected engines dosen't have a place to install a mechanical fuel pump.
Ok, I see, so, there is no hole or slot for the pump to go into. I was planning on taking everything off anyways. Do you know if the 289/302 timing cover housing will fit.
help on efi #1 bum's steer the fuel pump relay on your car is in the passenger side rear qaurter panel under the trim and it has a green base juump the largest two wires together and see if the fuelpump runs also the brown relay mentioned in an earlier post is actually the main eec relay it can be jumped the same way #2on the question about the timing cover for slk 70 you can use the original cover but you have to pull the cover cut out the hole for the fuel pump with a die grinder and just add the fuel pump eccentric and outer sliding ring off another motor just my 2 cents from a 16 year lincoln mercury tech with a 1988 efi mustang motor carbureted in my 73 maverick i almost forgot these cars were bad about the ignition switches coming apart and also there is a black with green striped wire tjat hooks up to the negative battery cable that is what is called the pcm power ground if it is not hooked up the pcm will not power up but you can still spray gas in it and it will run because the ignition system is fed by a different power feed
When you do find it, you will want to press the white or red button down. Pay close attention as to wether it's up (triped) or down. After doing so, try to crank again. If still no start go back and retrip it by banging it bluntly (don't strike it and break it though) to retrip it and reset once more. IF this works then you know the switch is going bad. If not then go for the relay jumping and pump testing. Sure hope you have checked for spark, you said HE said HE tried the spray down the throttle, did you?
I had a 88 that did the same thing, bad tank pump was the reason on mine. It would have just enough pressure to run, once I poured gas in the plentumn,,it ran on its own till you gave it some throttle then died. I put that 88 EFi engine in my 69.5,,, lot of work, but if you can do wiring, and understand the diagrams, its not hard to convert it to EFI. Chad
