Whenever I slow down to a stop, sometimes the motor stalls. I'm not sure, but I figure it's a carb problem? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks, Andrew
I agree with Jamie on the vacuum leak. Check all of the rubber lines for cracks. If it dies it would seem to be a rather large leak. You might be able to hear it. If you can get it to idle, spray some wd-40 around your vacuum lines and if the idle smooths out you have found your leak. Let us know how it goes.
It doesn't idle rough. There used to be a vacuum leak, but I already fixed it. When I fixed it the car ran a lot smoother, had a lower idle. However, it dies generally on a hill. Maybe this will help you figure it out.
If you give it a little gas, will it stay running? If so, turn the little idle screw that is on the back of the carb. It's probably idleing to low.
It idles at 900 rpm. Which is, according to the specs, about where it should be. As for giving it gas, if you give it alittle too much, it wants to quit until you've run for about 3 mins.
same as my car did. its your carb turn the idle up. well actually i had to buy a new carb it went junk.
brackenan, If this happens every time that you put the car under a small load (like idling on a hill) and is real consistant about it I wouls sujest you look the carb's throttle rod bores. If the throttle shaft can move up and down then you will have to throw it away or pay to have the bores fitted with bushings and seals. If it only happens sometimes or only when you have driven the car for a few miles and after it sits for a while it is ok until it has been driven a few more miles then I would say that you need to blow the filter sock off your pickup tube in the tank. Just disconnect the ruber hose at the fuel pump and blow air from a compressor into it. (make sure the fuel tank filler cap is off) You will hear a "POP" and the problem will never return.
If his car is idleing at 900 RPM already, he certainly does NOT need to idle it up anymore. My car idles smoothly at 650. 900 sounds to high to me, but I don't know what the specs are for a '76. Maybe Ford specified a higher idle because of A/C and power brakes. I would either put a rebuild kit in the carb or just go buy a remanufactured carb.
