after getting my hood scoop on I wanted to go all the way and make a functional ram air system, and you know what this thing actually works there is more power and quicker aceleration. I made it out of some old certral A/C ducts sitting in my buddies basement and a little duct tape lol. I hope to get something better in the future but for now I atleast wanted to see if it could make a diffrence on a little 250.
They did come off my cell phone, and no there is no air filter. right now iam back to having the original air cleaner on it just to be on the safe side and there has been alot of rain.
i could get one, there's really nothing special abput it. 13'' hole in the middle for a V8 air cleaner and the 4 screws that hold the scoop on.
I bought a pretty big Harwood scoop from Rick Book and installed it onto a donor hood, and have been thinking about doing a similar setup, just for the drag strip. But, soon afterwards, the fenders and a door came off and I got into body work to straigten everyghing out, and haven't had it put back together enough to be track-legal (no window in the new door). I figured I could leave the bottom plate on my air cleaner, and use some thick foam (like a swimming pool "noodle" or similar) to make a ring for the hood to contact. The hole in the hood is 11" diameter so there should be plenty of cold air flow to the carb. This is definitely NOT my daily driver hood...just an experiement to see what kind of improvements at the track cold air induction will give me. I keep getting startled at intersections when I see the scoop out of the corner of my eye, and I think someone is coming from the side street to hit me, but it is just the large obstruction on the hood...
i was wondering about the GT hoods...did they have the air lceaner hole as a stock option? the reason i ask is because i saw a Gt the other day and it didnt have the hole for the air cleaner just the holes for the scoop to bolt on to.
the scoops on the grabbers were not functional just for looks..many have dicussed making them fuctional but they are too small to make a difference.
little off topic: I was thinking about my fantasy mav and it would have to be a twin turbo boss 302 and the ram air would be coming in trough were the headlights are locatedI got this idea from a guy who did it to his cutlass.
I think it was the 69 cutlass that kinda hid hidden ram air snorkels next to the head lights, it would probably be pretty easy to replace the blinkers with cold air intakes if you still wanted to be able to drive at night. I'd love to see some pics of that cutty if you got any, (my other car's a 455 '85cutlass, please dont hit me lol)
yeah i have a 442 model and it has the snorkels under the front bumper I saw them in the august issue of popular hot rodding, i could only find one of it online, the magazine has better pics and it has an engine pic they might still have them on the rack.
can you post some before/after times and speeds? Or do you have any? I did mine as an experiment, but haven't been able to get "after" data yet.
You know, I got to thinking... My old grill from the 74 has the two oval lights cut into it...I bet I could do two cold air intakes at those holes, route the air around the radiator, and into the intake... How would that look with a couple of red K&N filters mounted in the holes so you could see the red from outside the car, maybe with a small chrome screen over it to keep it protected? I tried to do a photo shop with the red inserts, but I couldn't get it under 500k without going all blurry. But below is a pic showing the holes (with the original turn signals installed) and the space around the radiator.
