im sure u might be able to do this but im asking befour i run into trouble. has anyone took out the i6 and kept the original auto 3 speed tranny without any problems. its a ford windsor 302 so i figure thats the 302 they put in them in the first place. i need opinions thanks
as long as the 302 isnt too strong & the c4 is in decent shape, it'll be ok. if adding a lot of hp, you might want to rebuild the c4 with 5 clutch drums & at least a shift kit, & if adding a high stall converter put a babbit front pump bushing in in plce of the oem bronze one.
Is it a 3 gear stick or auto? The 3 speed stick is a pretty good tranny used my i6's 3 gear for years behind a 302 with lots of abuse.
It will bolt up and work if its a 250 inch 6 and a 302 8. It has fewer clutches in the forward pack and in the high clutch pack so it will not stay alive for long. You can help it by installing a TransGo #2 kit in it and a 12000 LB rated cooler. it will never be strong enough to take any abuse. Drive like a little old lady until you can get one built for the 8. I was talking to someone the other day about this and you can get one from Summit Racing for $750 plus shipping. Thats more than I charge but I don't ship across country.
