The biggeat problem with conversions is that the R12 Condenser is really to small for R134 use.

I guess I've been fortunate. Sounds like the trick is to replace the condenser with a larger parallel flow. I'll remember this....

Got a list of the parts they used? Were they original Maverick replacement pieces or other model converted to fit? What about the stuff under [in[ the dash? Original Mav stuff or something else?

Mark,, my reference to more efficient is the fact that it uses less product. I have never had a problem with 134A not keeping a car cool at a stoplight. But I hear people complaining bout it.

True but in most instances not a big deal. Some Evaps are also a bit mis-sized.

Yeah, I thought it might have been. I guess it is all in how you define "efficient". :) I usually don't comment on the R-12/R-134a issue since it can sometimes get like a holy war. I guess I was feeling a little extra talkative. :D

One of the main issues is that R-134a doesn't work as well for moving the heat and the high side of the system tends to run at higher pressures than R-12. Anything that increases airflow over the condenser or anything that increases the efficiency of the condenser(increasing size, parallel flow, etc.) will make the system work better(lowering high side pressure).
I had really good luck when I converted my old '90 Safari minivan to R-134a...it had a really big condenser and lots of airflow at idle. I'm sure people have had good Maverick conversions in the past..I was reluctant to try it with the small condenser though...

Well I learned something from you here Mark. I never thought of buying R-12 from ebay. I am A/C certified and licensed. Was going to convert my 88 Stang GT, but really want to keep the car totally original ( I am anal about it). So I will buy some on ebay.
    Thanks for the tip Mark!!!!

I didn't know that Dan! Guess I don't need to be telling ya about refrigerant properties then, huh? :)

I've had great luck buying R-12 from Ebay..if you do a little searching you can usually pick up the 14oz cans for $15-$20...not bad for the "real thing" ;)

Factory under dash under hood 88 5.0 new (ford compresser) R134a expanion valve new 4 pass condenser new hoses charge with 2 lbs on R134a freon at 88 deg. 35 lbs low side pressure and 200 lbs high side pressure i had 52 deg vent air .
Last weekend went to Las Vegas at 96 deg out side air temp had 62 deg vent air temp on way back home at 104deg out side air temp had 66 deg vent temp .
Condensor is all closed off ( no air gap on all 4 sides ) with 8 in. elect. fan running when compressor ingauged .

High and low side pressures are kinda low. Need more freon. You're looking for (with a 100*F day) around 45-55 psi on low side somewhere around 250 psi high side. Not the best for cool air at idle but, once rolling should be decent.
