Well my 289 has been giving me reving problems ever since i've had the car.

I rebuilt the carb and nothin it still idled crazzy.

So i borrowed my neighbors carb since he wasnt using.

and i tried to adjust to get the idle lower but if it drops below 1,500 the engine dies.Sometimes it will drop down to 1,000 and still run but i cant seam to get it @ 600rpm.

    any ideas?

    thanks

First thought is base ignition timing is off. It needs to be corrct before you can set your idle properly.

My uncle set the idle on it, and he checked it and said its correct.

If it revs too high and dies at low RPM you probably have a nice vacuum leak to find ... something to do what you saying would need to be like an EGR or PCV leak ...

I had the same thing with my '72 302. Ended up being vacuum leak. I replaced every single hose I could find in the engine compartment and it did not fix it. The bad hose was at the rear of the C4 tranny that runs into a hard line to the engine compartment. Since changing that, it has run a lot smoother.

Uhhhh...so why didn't you set it? That way you will know it's right.

Oh yeah.....vacuum leak like everyone else said.

If it has power brakes the booster could be leaking vacuum also. This however would usually result in a hard brake pedal. If it is running at 1000 rpm or so it should be a rather large leak. If you can't find it try spraying a little wd-40 around the vacuum hoses and the intake gaskets possibly and if it smooths the idle out you have found your culpret.

Another Q:were does the booster hook up on the tree?

Some diagrams say on the side, but some say on the top:huh:

The booster hooks basically anywhere on the tree it will fit. The tree just distributes the vacuum between whatever is hooked to it. Most of the trees I have seen have the large port (the one for the booster) on top.
