could this be a camshaft problem?

on my way home today, my maverick started running really rough... seemed to be off balance and also seemed to want to die so i pulled in to a parking lot and checked a few things. from what i can tell, the timing is really really off... it will run but not well and there is a loud thunking sound from around the left side valve cover in the front. I have not had a good chance to go look at it yet but tomorrow i should pull off the valve cover and check to make sure they are opening and closing. does anyone have some other suggestions to check?

    thanks :)

my first thought was rocker arm stud too. mine ran but felt like it was not running on all 8 cylinders. if thats what it is make sure you check the pushrod and the lifter.if everything looks okay there and valves are okay try checking the timing chain.:)

I agree with the other guys. It sounds like it bent a push rod or broke a rocker arm. Take that side valve cover off and it should be really obvious. If it is a push rod or rocker, check your valve and spring for that cylinder. A siezed valve will cause that to happen. Look at it closer and let us know. Good luck.

Do you still have the stock timing set?
    They were nylon* toothed! (*plastic!)
If it just broke a tooth and spun the chain a bit, you should be okay. However, if it shears multiple teeth, you can break all kinds of stuff.
    Good luck
