I have a 1971 Ford maverick with a 250 6 cylinder. I just put a new alternator on a couple of days ago because the old one wasn't charging enough. If I put the battery on a charger it will start but after I drive the car it won't. Now my car is not starting again. My battery is good I just had it checked. Any help would be appreciated
Yep - Sounds like a bad new alternator William, If you have a voltmeter around (digital multimeters are best) , try the following: 1. Check the voltage across the battery with the engine not running. It should read between 10 and 12 volts with 12 being normal. 2. Start the engine and check the voltage again. If it is the same or lower than the voltage in step #1 then you have an alternator or regulator failure. A normal reading with the engine running should be around 13-15 volts, more if the battery is really dead. Make sure the alternator belt is tight. If this is a new alternator, have the store you bought it from bench-test it. Believe it or not, I have bought NEW bad alternators. That is why I have them check it new, out of the box. If the alternator is good then I would replace the voltage regulator. Let us know how it works out ok? Regards, Tracy
try this with the car running disconnect the poitive cable, if it stays running then the alternater is working, if it dies, its bad.
thanks for the help I put a new regulator on today and had the voltage tested and it tested around 12 which I think is low. I am going to try to get a different alternator tomorrow. thanks for the help
I found the problem today the green wire coming from the alternator to the starting selnoid had broken off got it put back on and the voltage jumped way up. Thanks for the help William
