No, I did not ground it to anything, just hooked up the wiring harnass and held it in about the same position without touching anything.

I retested it with and without the ground. It now is going to just a hair under full with and without the ground at the full position. At the empty position it is right on the E with and without the ground. When the key is off it goes below the E. The ground doesn't seem to change the readings at all. I checked the float and it doesn't leak. I put everything back together and I'm just going to drive it. I think I fixed it by hitting it with a screwdriver, I give up. Hope it just keeps working. Thanks to everybody and thanks Dennis for the offer. If it acts up again I will take you up on the offer, at least buy the sending unit from you. It's a good excuse to get together and talk MAV.

You would be suprised at how many things can be fixed like this! I was in a helicopter once in the military, and we got a chip light detector that was lit. The pilot made a hasty landing, and the crew-chief got out and "fixed" the problem in this manner! Man...you talk about pucker factor for the rest of that trip! At that point, you're putting an AWFUL lot of faith in a few love taps with a Craftsman #4. (y)
