Hey ya'll, got me a problem. Just built my car and and it was riunning fine until this week. When I drive the car for a good while (say 1 1/2 to 2 hrs) It runs fine on the highway. But at stopsigns or redlights, it surges and bucks and spits and sputters until either I hit neutral or it dies. In neutral it does fine. I adjusted my idle, but all it did was make it buck harder right before it died. Can someone help me? Engine is 302 +.40, 268 cam, 2 bbl. Thanks, Preston

Adjust your idle screws when the engine is hot .

I would check ignition timing as well. I had problems like that last summer. No matter what i done i couldnt figure out what it was. So i got the bright idea to get a timing light... and sure enough it was running with the ignition timing at -2 degrees ATDC lol.. needless to say after setting it at the stock 6 degrees BTDC it did a world of difference, it idled great at stop lights and it sure pulled a lot harder... for a six lol.

Best of luck to ya man,
    Kyle B.

id agree with the idle screw while egine is running nice and hot.

i had a similiar problem, mine never shut off, but it would sputter and go nuts like it was gonna... i put new intake manifold on, and had to adjust the idle screw and since then..... no problems :) and it idles so much nicer too :)

I would have to agree with everyone. My car, with new engine, intake and carb did this for a few months and then just a few weeks ago I got wise and started messing with the idle screw and what do you know it runs like a champ. Mine is really tempramental though, somehow it gets out of wack very easily. Good luck

I agree with everyone as well.

Also check the points if you still have those.

I would be especially suspicious of a vacuum leak, you can take a bigger section of hose, and put it to your ear, and point around the engine compartment, works kinda like a doctors stethoscope.
