Ok I know a Grabber and a non-grabber but, what's special about the sprint? and how do you tell one from the other cars?
Sprints are basically a Maverick mocked up to be a rolling american flag IMO. A lucky few own them here. 1 year only car. The niceist one I have seen is Mavaholics IMO.
They can't be missed when in stock form. They are white 72 Mavericks with a two tone style lower treatment of Grabber blue. Then the two contrasting colors are pinstriped in red. Topping off the red/white/blue scheme is a small badge on the rear quarters that amounts to a U.S. flag. The interior follows the same type color scheme... The main color is white vinyl/plastic with blue trim and some red welting on the seats. The paint and interior was only available on Sprint vehicles in that one year. Pinto runabout Maverick base coupe Mustang base coupe & Mustang base fastback Were all available with the matching Sprint decor package. The Stangs bring big money nowadays. Not like a Shelby, Boss, or Cobra Jet... but more than a common variety. The same is coming true for the Maverick Sprints from what I have seen. Not as much as our "Boss", the Grabber, but more than any other in same condition. There is another notable appearance package, the Stallion. I don't know as much about that one. It was offered towards the end of Maverick production, and was available on Mustang 2s and Pintos as well. I am most familiar with the black paint and contrasting graphics, but I think they were available with the same graphics on a few different base colors.
Useless trivia: There was an AMC model that was trimmed in a similar color scheme around the same time. Somewhere in the 68-72 year range. The paint on this one was meant to invoke the flag as well, but it was more pronounced. Almost like the flag was waving from the paint. I think the model name was AMC Rebel. The irony just hit me... The name Rebel, with the flag of the union on it.
72 ad: The rarest Sprint model I have ever seen in person was an R code Stang fastback. IMO, the rarest Sprint of all would be any surviving Pinto... I have 'heard' of one Mav that had V8, buckets, and floor shift 3 speed. However, the source was not what most would consider reliable. Not much better than your neighbor that had friend in HS with a Boss Maverick.
i don't know but man that pinto looks pretty swell when i was younger i thought those pinto wagons with the portals in the rear sides was way kool...so 72 was the only year, hum are they worth some good duckies?? in good stock shape??? i think i've seen one in town just sittin and collecting dust....
Is it just me, or does that badge on that Maverick look too big??? Hard to see, but it appears to be the Mustang badge on the quarter of the Maverick. More useless trivia: The Sprints sent to Canada were red/white/blue, but had a Canadian flag badge...
Yea, they had to find someway to get the detail in so they made it way to big and raised it up to high. Luckily the real thing dont look like that.
I bought a Sprint new, with 302, 3spd on the floor, and bench seats. Got stupid and sold it cheap about 4yrs later. Regretted it ever since!
hey john, if you know for sure that there is a pinto sprint collecting dust, i would be VERY interested. i am dying to get my hands on one. i even got the wife to say, "if you find one, you can buy one." and she is always on my case about not needing any more "toys". PM me tdomick@hotmail.com thanks
Unfortunately Maverick Sprints never came with buckets Although the Mustangs did and would have been and easy swap using Maverick seat Brackets. I remember years ago at Englishtown somebody was selling a mint Mustang Sprint complete interior for $300 .. If I had known then what I know now I would have bought it ...
I know it's possible that some Pintos survived, but it looks more and more unlikely to me every day. Just think of the guys a few years from now that get together a Sprint collection of the 2 Stangs and the Mav... They can never finish the collection without the Pinto! Mark my words, there will be a day that someone pays good money for the Pinto to finish their collection... If one ever surfaces. Same goes for the Stallions. The port-hole Pinto has been sought after by a few folks in the past I noticed. Talking to folks or looking in magazine want ads ect... that wagon has a following. Dave
3 stangs actually, Dave. There was an extremely limited run of convertibles made. See pics here: http://www.angelfire.com/sports/1972mustang/
