http://www.cobratorches.us/ The demonstration was VERY impressive, fan2488 and I (and my wife and his daughter) were stunned and captivated for about 20 minutes watching how clean this thing cuts, and how simply it welds (with rods layed down on the hot surface, not wire feed or arc). Clean cuts, quick welds, no slag, no spattering, etc. It runs on 4psi each of oxygen and acetylene. I just wanted to see if anyone has used this or a similar product. Would it take care of most of my garage projects? I assume it is not hot enough for welding frames/front-ends, etc, but for bodywork, odd jobs, maybe even shock tower cuts, this seems like a good product. Plus, only $300 and change. What do you guys think?
Hmmm.....guess I'd have to see it to believe it. Especially the welding aluminum claim. Maybe they will be in Carlisle with a demo.
Here's a link to some videos (including welding the aluminum). I "right clicked & saved" the videos to my desktop and played them from there (the first video didn't stream). http://www.cut-like-plasma.com/info_video_library.htm Interesting!
Eastwood also sells these. They have been around several years. HotRod did a test of one back in the early eightys best I remember and gave it high praises. Used to be made by Henrobe I believe. I've never used one, but they look like they would be easy to operate.
The guy doing the demo at the swap meet made it look very easy...he used it to cut like a blow torch, but with 1/16" wide cut and no slag, and he just tapped the bottom and any crust fell off, and perfectly smooth cut. He did a weld on aluminum, bent the plate into a U, and the weld did not break or crack. Welded 1/4" plates, and thin sheet metal, and again...looked simple, wearing only sunglasses, no spatter, and VERY clean and smooth welds. If you get a chance to see a demo, I highly recommend it. Ed (fan2488) even watched it twice (he got there before me, and then watched it again after telling me about it). We both looked back and forth and said "gawwl-eee!" a few times (sorry to make us sound like idiots ) but it really was neat to watch how clean and simple this setup worked.
The guys over at metalmeet really like these for bodywork due to the weld being easier to work than a mig. Quite versatile too. Its on my xmas list.
Unless it self lights and shuts off when you release a trigger, I dont see how it could be easier to use for body work.
