Guys I had major slack where my Power Steering Control Valve attached to my Pittman Arm. Put it in the shop & had it replaced. Guy said the 1st new one he put on this morning leaked like crazy so he took it off & replaced with another new one. My Steering has Zero slack in it now but......Now the Power Steering is not as smooth as before. When I slow down to make a turn with brake applied it make the steering wheel very hard to turn. Also when I'm sitting still with brake applied I can turn wheel to left with ease but when I turn wheel to right it is very hard to turn. Would you guys guess that the shop hooked the hoses up wrong or think it would be a faulty Control Valve. Your input would be appreciated. Thanks
Be careful if the hoses are crossed ! I always thought the hoses were size specific (meaning you couldn't cross them ) But a friend replaced something on his Fairmont, reached through the steering wheel to turn the key on, the wheel spun so hard it almost broke his wrist !!
It probably needs to be adjusted. When your control valve is properly centered, the wheel should remain completely still with the car running and the effort to turn the wheel in either direction should be equal. Check the instructions here: http://www.stainlesssteelbrakes.com/pdf/A0725-A0725-1.pdf
I agree with Boss9 here...I've seen this exact thing happen when they were crossed. It would not be drivable.
an old man showed me that if you raise the front wheels with the motor running and the valve is out of adjustment the wheels will turn by themselves. Just please set the parking brake!
Took it back to the shop. Had them check the adjustment & troubleshoot. Still have the same problem. The shop said they think it might be my power steering Pump. The Pump is relatively new & worked perfect before we changed the Control Valve? The car drives ok going down the road. The problem is when slowing down to make a turn or turning the wheel while sitting still. It's a little hard to turn & you can feel it sort of pulsating as your trying to turn it. Any more ideas????
I have exactly the same symptoms, got a brand new valve from autokrafters . Opened the pump, some minimal scoring, valve not stuck. What I will do next is install the old leaking valve to confirm if it's the pump or the valve.
probably the valve is bad. There's not a lot of people left that actually know what they are doing on these type systems. Don't suppose you want to drive to texas? If I could see it I could fix it.
Those valves are fun. Takes some time to tweak, and sometimes you just can't fix it. On my 4 door, we rebuilt the control valve, worked absolutely perfectly. On my 2 door, it was always harder to turn to the right. The only time we got it equal, it turned to the right on its own, which wasn't adjusted right. Rebuilt it again, replaced it with an old one that we rebuilt (spare parts are nice), finally just got rid of it and installed the manual adapter, which is nothing more than a control valve with no slack for the valving system or the head the lines attach to.
I went to the Shop yesterday & told them it still wasn't right. They said they will order another Control Valve & put it on next week.
Another thing to keep in mind, if it worked fine before, it might have a piece of trash in the system somewhere, maybe in the hydrualic cylinder.
