I drove my Maverick through Atlanta without problems, (engine dieing). Awh great car. When I got home, new Leaf Springs! Awh something todo. Add leaf springs. Then I ordered a Carter RBS carburetor and 1970 Mustang Timing gears and chain. Next the front suspension then interior. This is a great car! Ken
Been driving them daily for over a year now. It never gets old haveing people stare at your car while sitting in traffic or come up and ask you about it in parking lots and stuff. When I drive new/normal cars now, I can't help but notice how bland and boring they are. I can't see myself not driving a Maverick daily anytime soon. They are reliable, simple, cheap and easy to work on. I do carry a few spare parts in the trunk though, just in case.
haha, i dont even have a spare in my trunk.... Its my sort of reverse psychology. when i had a spare in my trunk, both my rear tires blew out in the same day. 2 months of no spare, and no tire problems!
Jamie, your a riot, yep I have 2 fuel filters just waiting to be installed. Lucky, hmmmm no spare tire, must have triple A. No bad luck intended. Ken
I found myself walking home on 3 diffrent occasions when I didn't carry spare parts. Now that I do, the car has never broke down. Of course, the actual body of the car is now a '72 instead of a '74 Grabber, but it is mechancially the same car. The last time I was left walking was the morning of 11/28/05 . Exactly 24 hours later I was haveing the car drug home on a tow truck after a serious wreck. Those were not GOOD days. I carry jumper cables, a spare carburetor, spare alternator, spare Duraspark II ignition module, a roll of wire and wire cutters, spare misc. hoses, a space saver spare, and basic tools. If I can't fix it or rig it enough to get me home on the side of the road with any of the above, then it's getting towed.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! Please dont get me wrong, I am not trying to be rude, BUT!!!!!!!!! I think that I would do some serious thinking on the maintenance status of the car if I had to carry that many parts. I have owned 16 Mavericks and not one of them has ever left me stranded on the road..... I did have one of my race cars break the very end of a valve spring off that somehow got through the oil pump pickup screen and got lodged in the oil pump locking it up and shearing the gear pin off killing the engine. But that is not a daily driver and race cars have problames some times. (more than we would like some times) I carry a spare tire and tire tools and a pair of jumper cables (mainly the cables are for other peoples cars) The same things I carry in my 2005 F-150.
i can see carrying a lot of that. the altenator not so much, ive known people who did lose their alt and just bypassed it to get to town then bought whatever they could fit. but the rest, i carry points to switch to if my pertronix fails. the point replacer i had before went out twice just by washing the car. they offered to replace it again but i said no thanks and went to the pertronix.ive seen duraspark ignitions fail and you cant replace that with points. ive seen a wire under the hood get torn beyond repair by a rock bouncing up off the road (pretty unlucky but still happened). i have heard of and seen the same with hoses and belts, has not happened to me yet but if im out over 100 miles away on 395 there are no parts shops and no tow trucks, just traffic driving by and pointing. the spare i need to get back from my painter, but anyone can tell you of the chances of an unseen road hazard slicing your sidewall. as you can see the most of these are not related to the car its self and all of them can be a major headache and walk depending on where you live. where i live, even in a new car you carry a blanket and water to drink as well. you could be 15 minutes out in the winter and get caught in a blizzard that even chains wont get through.
i had a 84 mustang with msd and a rock hit one of the wires and shut her down cold and i was looking for some thing else because who would have thought about that happen... then again i was 19 at the time and didnt know a thing .. then again 10 years late and not the wiser..travis
