I just bought a 71 Comet GT and can't find the Vin plate that shows what the car came with. Where is it usually found? I checked the engine compartment and door jams nothing. What do I do if its missing and want to know what the car came with?
On the driver's side of the dash at the base of the windshield. It can be viewed from outside. Also the VIN is stamped on the fender apron under the fender.
Maybe I did'nt ask the question right. On a site here it shows a Vin Plate not the Vin numbers by the windshield. The one where it shows Body, color, trans. Is there an options plate? How do I know what my comet came with originally?
That is a sticker on the door jam .... probably removed when painted. Get a Marti Report for your car and it will show all the original options, build date, dealer that sold it, etc. Do a search on this site for Marti for more info. Also ... if the person who sold you the car did not give you any original paperwork a Marti report will also prove if it is an original Comet GT or just a replica ...
Ah ha... Check this out. Might help some. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=19077&highlight=Ford+999
VIN decoding Do a search here for VIN DECODE Gene and you will find some links. As far as the Marti Report-they can do that from the VIN number either from your title/bill of sale or get it off the dash at the base of the drivers side dash/windshield as stated. The detailed info as far as color, transmission, rear end ratio etc. was on the blue sticker mentioned in the drivers door jamb around the catch for the latch. It should be on the jamb, not the door. Look carefully, as it may not have been sanded off, just painted over. Seth
Marti can reproduce the door data sticker if your car was made in the USA. If it was Canadian built, He will reproduce the door data sticker but it will say made in the US and not Canada. You will have to sign a form stating you are aware of the discrepency and accept it. The 999 report does not mention the GT package. At least it didn't for my 71 GT.

Ok ordered the report last night. As some of you know, I just bought this car. I have been a Comet owner for almost 3 full days. Originally I wanted a Green 1971 Comet with A/C and manual trans. But I settled for this Yellow one with no A/C and auto. Well last night I was cleaning the car out and pushed up to the floor board is the original clutch pedal. I'm thinking about converting it back to a manual which is really what I wanted. Of course I wait for the Vin to come back before I do.
