I am trying to take the play out of my steering wheel. I opened up the filler hole on the box, expecting it to be bone dry--which it was in a sense, but there was evidence that axle grease had been used previously...I filled i with 90w gear oil and capped it, only to find ALL of the gear oil in my driveway next morning...can't see where the leak is from underneath, but I'm banking that there it some sort of fitting(gasket?) around the outlet for the pittman arm....I'm thinking of yanking a manual box out of a junkyard car, rconditioning it outside the car then slapping it in...am I asking for trouble, can rebuilt boxes be found? will they cost more than my car did? Do I use axle grease or gear oil? AP out
I believe if you google hard enough you will find new or reuilt ones for sale. I think they are listed in the Autokrafters catalog as well.
If you get another steering gear, or fix this one, use this mod to keep it working well. Not too hard to do, and will protect the box. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=10280&highlight=steering+gear+mod
