Hello, Just purchased my first Maverick 1970 I6. Everyone is laughing and saying what a piece of junk I bought. What they really don't see is the beauty I see and the plans I have for building this car. I needs rear quarter panels, doors (rusted at bottom), and that's all that's really wrong with it. The car currently runs on a very very tired I6 with 184k plus original miles on the engine. I am thinking about putting a 302 in and swapping the axles to 5 lug in the 8" rear it currently has. Nothing too serious, just want to move a little... these cars are fairly light and I can get a ticket... even with the tired 6 in it... throwing oil everywhere. Just want a nice strong running, clean looking Maverick!! Again, to help feel a little better about what I've gotten myself into, I'll need to replace the quarters and the doors right away. That will bug me until I do. Other than that, the car is really straight and has never been in an accident/fenders have never been off. Purchased from (1) owner which is very rare. I would love to see the look on the guys face when I am done with it. He basically just drove the car to work everyday since purchasing it back in '70. Anyways, if you cold be so kind to help steer me in the right direction to finding these critical parts, I'd much appreciate it. These cars are not like Mustangs (which I also own) where you can find parts just about anywhere. Also thrown in the deal was a set of Granada disc brakes... complete set (with turned rotors). Help me bring this beauty back to life. Thanks, Slk70
Welcome to the forum! Post some pics of the car. Create a post in the parts wanted section and see what is out there.
welcome to the board. go to the gallery and show your friends some of the maverick pictures. you can go to the archives and find threads on just about any subject. you do know that you can't just change out the axles. the whole rear has to be changed as there are differences.
What other changes need to be done. I assumed this was a regular 8" ford rear. Please let me know. I knew it was too easy...
too bad you didnt bring them to knotts berry farm on sun, you could have rubbed their noses in "ugly mavs"
Welcome to the board. Glad to see another one from Cali here . As for the replacement parts.... There are alot of mavs in the junkyards down here and usually the doors are in decent shape, If you like pm me and I'll dig up all the addys for ya . I'm in San Bernardino. Why is there rust? Was it near the beach? Jamie
Welcome. That's a great little project-car, and I don't care what those other idiots say. You shouldn't either...
the car has been next to water all of it's existence. The guy was a longshoreman and used it for work everyday.
richard good to see you made it over here... these guys can tell you about anything you need to know... unlike me! give me a ring anytime! and remember post some photos of your car on here! these guys love photos! if you don't they will post this: oh yeah... now that you got the bug there will be no turning back!
As said, you can't just change the axles. The bearings are a diffrent size. Just find an entire 5 lug rear in the junkyard and bolt it in. Not too extreamly hard, I just did it to my car last week. The center chunk is the only part of the 4 lug rear that is compatible with a 5 lug. So you may be able to save a few bucks if you buy just the housing with axels and backing plates.
