Well, I appreciate all of the comments guys. I can't see me selling the Saleen and the biggest problem I have with the mustangs is the rear torque boxes get busted up so easily. I have one right now that is split and cracked beyond my desire. I have patched it up with welds and will end up selling it. I love Fox Mustangs, don't get me wrong, I just want a carbed drag car again and the Maverick is a good candidate for me.

There's soooo many mustangs at the track because they make great race cars and I still love Mustangs. Your Saleen Mustang could be built cheaper, easier, and faster in my opinion...but, the Sprint would be waaaaaay cooler and have much more originality. There's soooo many Mustangs.

So if its more important to go fast, do the Stang...if you like being a little different, do the Sprint.

    Drag the Mustang

Keep the sprint as original as possible. Beat the heck out of the Mustang since they are more readily available for parts. Torque boxes.......if you back-half the car that should take car of your torque box issue.

    KEEP THE SPRINT ORIGINAL.

If you raced the Sprint that would be equivalent to taking all 492 (?) of the Original Shelby Cobras and smashing them head on into a brick wall. JMHO.

Wow.. those are some pretty bold statements seeing that the Saleen is more rare than the Sprint... my '87 Saleen is 1 of 22 of it's build and was #4 of 34 experiment projects from Kenny Brown Performance in 1990. I know I neglected to mention that before, but I wouldn't think the Sprint is as rare as that. How many 302-2V Sprints were produced in '72??

Just my $.02.....You have two very rare and beautiful cars there. Find a standard LX or GT mustang, or a standard Maverick, they are both available and much easier to find, and fix one of those to race. Keep the other two, take very good care of them, and use them as show cars or drivers. I think they both are worthy of a resto or restomod, but not for the track. Puts too much wear and tear on them, and it is hard to put them back on the street after a few years of track duty. Take care, and good luck with your delima. Wish I had a problem like that!

i have to agree with earl that being a serious track car is very hard on the car. that's why i bought the 71. it is strictly a track car. when it breaks i can pretty much take my time fixing it. i don't know what your situation is but i always like taking the car to the track on a trailer also because it eventually will break there. the tracks where i am are 42, 85, and 102 miles away. :)

I retract the part about the Mustang being more readily availiable........1 of 22....sheeeesh.....if that ain't rare, what is?

If you go for another Mustang, I have heard that the '83 was the year for the lightest Mustang body. And again, I may be wrong.

Nah, it was my first car and will probably never leave me... if it does it'll go back to my bro.

Does anyone have any production numbers for the Sprint or know where to find them??

It was a vinyl decal. The sides were painted blue, then had vinyl tape that was about 1 1/2" wide. IT was 1" of blue, 1/4" of white and then 1/4" of red. Thats how they got the side striping so straight and evenly spaced. When I redid mine, I painted all the blue and used 3M 1/4" red pin striping. I have the number if your interested in the correct color. As far as production, there was 15,425 Sprint Mavericks made. I do not have the breakdown by engines or transmissions because it cost more than I'm willing to pay to get that data, but I can tell you less than 12% were V8s.

I want to add, as numbers go, Sprint Mavericks are not that rare. But as survivor statistics go, they are pretty rare. Funny thing about them, of all the ones I know of or have ran across over the last 10 years, most of them have been V8s.

I bought one new in '72, a V8, std shift car, and I still miss it. One of life's little mistakes, letting that car go. Oh well...................maybe find another someday.

Cool.. thanks for the info. They aren't as rare as I thought I guess. It just seems that way because I've only ever seen one other one in person. I also saw the Mustang one time too. I was pretty shocked.

Where I'm from there was someone in a neighboring town that had a Maverick Sprint as well and they owned a body shop and were pretty well known. I went to their town one day to get some parts at a salvage yard and after I got what I needed I walked to my car to leave and there were two big guys waiting for me. They asked me where I had gotten the car and I told them. They thought that I had stolen it from the guy with the body shop... it's was pretty funny but they weren't laughing. Oh well, they let me go without beating me up, lol...

I know where there is a junkyard in PA that has a Maverick Sprint and no more than 50 ft away is a Pinto Sprint. Both are extremely rusty.
