Fuse is good, but no power to the fuse (neither side of the fuse contact is hot). I have done a lot of work to the steering column and shift collar, and swapped out the ignition switch and starter switch. Any suggestions where to start looking. Not an emergency, since the only thing on it that works is the speedometer, and it is off by 10 mph. I use my tach as a speedo, instead.
Check the wiring again plugging into the steering column. It could be a wire pulled out on the plug some won't see it just push the wires in. Check all other wires for a good connection.
Maybe all your lights burned out at the same time. If so, head to the nearest casino and play the lottery.
What do you mean...headlights work fine. only dash lights, including the column shift indicator light, have gone out. I am still losing at lottery...
yeah but you know how you turn the light switch to dim the dash lights well the spring and the little contact don’t touch or the spring gets a break in it ...try to wiggle the switch and turn it see if the dash lights come on
Neither my '74 Grabber nor my '72 had working dash lights when I got them. Turning the switch back and forth (bright and dim) repeatedly made them come on. Of course both of those cars had been sitting for years. Since yours worked before It's probably something in the wireing.
IF there is no power at the fuse, its in your light switch. The dimming circuit is a reostat mounted on the switch its self. Over the years it corrodes so the wiper does not make a good connection to the reostat coil. By moving the switch as Jamie describe, the wiper will scrape the coil and clean it to some extent. I think you can still buy a new headlight switch and that is what I would recomend.
You know how you always have one last piece left over after a job, and you don't know what it is? Well this is it, after the removal, disassembly, painting, and reassembly of the steering column and internals. It looks and feels like a spring, and not electrical, but just in case, could this be the culprit? Doesn't appear to have any shiny areas like it was an electrical contact. I tried the rotating the headlight switch, and nothing happened. It has a history of being a little "sensitive" to where it worked and how well (it would work on full bright, and intermittently on down to dim) so it will be replaced anyway. What all is on that circuit? My dome light works, as well as headlights, turn signals, and running lights, but not the shift column indicator light and the instrument cluster lights.
