Yeah they do have springs. Just use a couple large screwdrivers on opposite sides below the reluctor to pry it up. Try not to pry on the "spokes" of the reluctor, but on the centre ring part of it. It should come off fairly easily.

    Another Dist. Question

Not to steal your thread, but..I currently have the a pointless dist. with a casting #C9ZF-12131-A. Without tearing the car apart looking for EID numbers, I need to know the year 302 I have (or at least for now the year of dist.) The 6 was replaced with a v8 prior to my purchase. (seller did not know year). Does the C9 in the code mean 1969? I'm currently having a problem with the tip of the rotor being too far away from the prongs inside the cap, causing it to surge while idling. It's not doing my cap any good either. I will eventually be replacing the dist. but then again knowing the year would help. :hmmm:

means 1969, but thats just the casting date. could have been used for years with various internals. i think the duraspark started in 1975. was there a tag on the dist near the vac adv?

No tag, but near the cap hold-down clip on the carb side it shows Motocraft and the numbers 12127 next to it.

Looks like that's what I'll be doing Friday. Anything in particular I need to look for?

I used carb cleaner to cut the varnish(baked oil)off of the shaft to allow it to slide through the housing.....once the gear is out of the way. Don't fret if you accidentaly break the gear. They are not too expensive and your local NAPA has or can get them, better yet if you have access to a donor dizzy. Working with multiple donors are great teaching aids. When you go back with the gear...Lightly sand the shaft with crocus cloth(sand paper),also use a bore brush from your gun cleaning kit to clean the gear. The gear can go on 180* out, which is not good. With the gear off take the pin punch and insert through the shaft hole, look at the bottom end.You will see that the pin hole is off-center...so is the gear and they have to match. Good luck, and let us know how things go......(y)
