If you just put your 8" tubes on the 9" center, you don't need to cut any axles or remount the spring pads!
This is what Ford and Shelby did in the sixties before they got around to engineering a 9" rear specifically for the Mustang.
Around here, competent shops get 150-200 bux to put your tubes on a 9" center.
You just need to make sure the chunk has 28 splines, rather than 31.
This way you keep your brakes, spring perches, axles, bearings, etc...
The only thing the shop has to worry with is keeping your pinion angle and mounting the tubes square. They use the same bar jig as if narrowing the rear, but without all the extra hassle.

Yup. I did just that. Had a 9" out of a luxobarge narrowed used my 8" 28 spline axles. Easy and worth it. Now runs 3.70s with a detroit locker in the 9"

I dont remember exactly how much but it was not much or I would have remembered. It was less than $150. Just used my same 28 spline axles out of the 8" Fits dead on perfect. Looks like it came that way. Used my 8" to get all the measurements.
