My dad stopped by to show me a set of Cragars he just picked up and i had to try them on my Comet just to see.He might loose them for the summer haha, after all my car is alot closer to being finished then his 67 Cougar. He should go for that right?
I had a pair for a while and they did look very nice. but that was one of the ones that Costco fixed for me on a tire change. did i say before, dont trust costco's tire center? they bent a stock steel rim for me too.
The Cragar's have the PERFECT look...(here comes the "but") but they do break, and anyone doing work on them will break them. I have a chunk missing from where a tire shop tried to pound the center cap off and busted a piece of the ring around the cap off with it. I have stripped studs from tire shops "running up" the lugs one at a time, not knowing enough to start all 5 and THEN run them up. Also, since they are a two-piece rim welded together, I have heard of the weld breaking loose and the tire separating from the spokes. That is all too bad, because, in my opinion, they are by far the nicest looking wheel for our cars. I think they make a one-piece rim now, but it looks more like the Torque-Thrust II (in my opinion, the 2nd best looking rim for our cars ). After owning the Cragar "unilug" rim for a couple years, I will be buying something different next time. Probably the TTIIs. I only paid $100 for my set of very used Cragars, and they have been great rims except for the minor inconveniences listed here. If you have tires put on or taken off of them. Remove them from the car yourself, and take out the center cap off. That should take care off most of your potential problems.
i'm lucky in the tire department, one of my best friends owns a tire shop and is into cars,so he takes good care with anyone's wheels [ and the discount prices help too] Now to just convince dad to let me use them for a while!
They break? I've had mine for 10 yrs + and they still look as good as new, but afterall....they are only 14's, time for some 17's
Dave; I spun the center out of a set back in 1980 on a Mav race car I had. Too much power for a unilug wheel. Broke the center around the lugs, and messed up my quarters a bit. They are fine for a street car. Just keep the chrome polished and waxed.
