hello, i will be welding in some patches on my maverick. my questions are, what gage metal do i buy that is easy to work with. also can i use a propane tourch to soften the metal or do i need something more powerfull?
no tom, i never worked with sheet metal. but i do know that if you heat metal up it should soften it. i just would like to know how much heet? i don,t want to buy something that i don,t need. thank you for your reply.
Just my : I use 20 gauge on most repairs, it's easy to work, but plenty strong, (and not as easy to burn a hole in welding it up.) just a hammer and dolly (and some patience/ practice) will get you nice and close. good luck!
putting that much heat will soften the metal but it will also warp it. It just depends on where your making the repairs. For external repairs, I would not take a torch to it. For shaping floor pans, I have use a tourch to persuade metal to see things my way. I would think a propane tourch would work for small areas but I"ve never actually tried it. I have a oxy/ac set.
thanks for the info. i first have a big job to do. the motor in our escort ate a piston. i have the new well not new motor, just need some warm days to get started. next time i,am down the garage i will take a picture of the blow up and send it.
