I've been toying with using the AOD out of the 84 T Bird in the Mav. Is this year model the one with a computer or can I use as is? The car has throtle body injection on it now, I plan to use aluminum intake/holley 4 combo. I know some of the AOD's used a throttle position cable to controll the shifts, unsure if this one does or not. I have a Hurst shifter I planned to use with the C4, what would I have to do to modify it to work with the AOD? I know some of you have done this swap and said you had to clearance the tranny tunnel with a BFH a bit, but what about header clearence with the 6901's? Also, what about tyhe crossmember? Does it have to be moved/modified in any way? A lot of questions, but I know somebody knows!

Move this if I stuck it in the wrong place! Thanks

84 is one of the weakest models out there, so you will want to swap the valve body at the very least, also had a tailshaft oiling problem.
Crossmember needs to move back about 1 3/4 to 2 inches, best way is just to build one.

You really shouldn't have to make much of a change to the shifter to make it work, you may have to turn the lever over on the AOD to match the C4 lever setup. To do that, just pull the pan, you pull the shaft, don't remember past that, it wasn't too bad and it was years ago.

With my 74, no problems on the tunnel at all. Hooker Super Comps need a bit of massaging, I dinged my pan in a bit to make it all clear and that will never happen again. The pan will NOT seal right.

Thanks 74merc. I'm still undecided on wheather I'm going to use the AOD in the mav or my sons 68 F100 pu. I like the idea of the overdrive if I ever go to lower gears to make it more streetable, but if it is going to be weaker than a C 4, I don't need it in the Mav which will see some "spirited" driving from time to time. In the pickup, which was originaly a 360 3 on the tree, it would probably be better behind the stock 289 we're putting in it. Plus the pickup has tons of room, shouldn't have any clearance issues at all....

I think Clint told me he was more happy with a C4 in his F100 then the AOD thats currently in there.

Aside from my headers, the AOD doesn't really have any clearance issues in my Comet.

It can be built to handle some power fairly easily, swapping the valve body works wonders.

I love my AOD on the highway, but my C4 stalled at 2000, my AOD stalls at about 1200. A converter swap would do wonders for my car. The 84 AOD needs some TLC no matter what you put it in to prevent problems.

We decided to put the AOD in the pickup. Less hassel than the 3 speed. He has a car 3 speed. long tailshaft, so we figured the auto will be easier to hook up, no clutch/linkage problems. Will stick with the C4 in the Mav
