So i've been workin on the 71 maverick for about 3 days, and after it was sitting for 10 years i got it started today :D , choked me with smoke a little but didnt sputter or anything after i got it started, hell ive got a new truck with a 5.9L engine, and the 5.0 in the mav sounds 10x better :D , anyways the problem was mainly the points, after i replaced that i had spark :D , tried to turn it over but it died, started , died , went and bought 8 new spark plugs and installed them and it started right up :D so to recap what i did
1)drain and replace the old oil and coolant
2)took spark plugs out and put mystery oil and wd40 in
    3)drained and cleaned fuel tank
    4)drained fuel lines
    5)replaced battery
    6)replaced points
    7)replaced spark plugs
    8)put clean fuel in
    9)started it up :D

anyways thanks to everyone that helped me :) , now i can focus on the cosmetics of the car, first of all drive it to the car wash for an hour long one on one with a high pressure hose :s , after that i'm planning on changing the front end of it a bit as i dont like how it comes to a point in the middle if that makes sense, i was thinking of either putting a mustang front clip on it, or making/finding some custom parts to square it off a bit, maybe someone can point me in the right direction?
    thanks again !

Uhh ohh, sounds to me like your getting the Maverick bug. (y)

Old Ford P/S systems are notorious for haveing a real "light" feel to them. Looks to me like either your carb is leaking gas (fire hazard) or your valve cover(s) needs a new gasket. Top of the intake looks wet. Good looking car though, congrats on getting it going!

yea i shoulda posted that i spilled a bit of gas while priming the carb, aswell as doused it with wd-40 because it was sticking, pretty much anything that moved got doused with wd-40 for that matter lol

Congrats!!! Nice looking car. Looks pretty solid too. One of the earliest mods I'd make is to get rid of those points and get a Petronix kit for it. Points are always a pain in the ass.

wtg. personally, i like the maverick front end. if you put a mustang front end on it, it might get an identity crisis. :biglaugh:

Nice ... looks like a nice diamond in the rough car ... shouldn't need much work to make it a looker!

Congrats on the car! Good luck with it. Looks like fun. Like Mavaholic said, go with a Pertronix & get rid of the points. It's a pretty cheap & simple upgrade that is well worth it. Consider getting a Flamethrower coil to go with it if you do.

Don't Mustangs also have a pointed front end?

yea some of them are pretty pointed, i was considering just getting one of the front end kits to convert a mustang to a shelby mustang and retrofitting it but i not sure yet..
