Unless you give it a reason to blow, it isn't going anywhere at 5k.
You would need to spin it up over 7 if you want a reason to worry.
I doubt your lifters would let you spin it high enough to hurt it.

Now if you have a rod knocking, or haven't checked the oil lately, you are giving it a reason to fly apart.

my rpms at 5200 max.. and it scares me as well.. but everyone i have talked to say just use it on a push button on the steering wheel... that way you can have it when you want it and shut it off when you dont want it..

i plan on using it when i get the 512 cam and gears and rims and tires... no point in roasting the back "wheel" off the car.. i want it with dual wheel traction.. hehe

i am thinking a max of 150 shot

When I first got the car, I was worried at 4000, then after pushing it a little and doing some mods, I feel safe at 5500, but my cam starts to give off around 5000, so I don't push it past there anymore (it is no use, as accelleration starts to lag).

I had no idea that 7000 would be more of the mechanical limit.

maybe a 150 shot would be fun to play with. And cheap! Can't wait for the track to open back up...

    Thanks!

I'm a design engineer. I've worked for Navistar/International in engine development (about 4 years). I worked on the 6.0L V8 and the 4.5L V6, designing parts and calibrating engines. I'm currently working for Rolls-Royce aircraft. I spent 2 years designing shafts, seals, and structures, for the JSF liftfan, and now I'm working in current-product improvement. Mostly 250 engine stuff. It goes in helicopters and some small planes. I've also worked on some passenger jet turbo-fans, turbo-props, and the C-130 and Hawkeye T56 turbo-prop.

My whole family is gear heads (my uncle, dad, and brother are also engineers). When we get together all we talk about is cars and engines. My wife says that makes me a dork.

My cam is the not-quite-Edelbrock version of the Performer Plus cam.

ATOMonkey, dorks don't do aircraft engineering or mechanics. IMO, at least. I always wanted to get into the air force and fly and work on planes (I know, two completely different beasts!) but my hearing impairment kept me out. Something about me saying "Huh!??!? Can't hear you..." after being informed that the enemy is shooting at my arse-end!

Nitrous Oxide is chemically N2O. The molecule is generally considered to be "inert" which means it doesn't readily combine with other dissimilar molecules, nor does the N2O molecule split apart. Key word is readily (at room temperature and atmospheric pressure).

Now, put the same molecule under some pressure and heat (such as inside an internal combustion engine) and the molecule splits apart. The 2 nitrogen atoms stay together and combine with other nitrogen atoms. The oxygen is what makes nitrous work so well. It just adds oxygen to the engine--very simply put, and actually it is simple. The nitrogen is there to help the mixture in the cylinder combust (rather than explode....if there was pure oxygen in there, the engine would self-destruct almost instantly). Because basically you are adding oxygen to the engine, you also have to add fuel, which is why you see fuel enrichment systems on nitrous motors.

That answer the question? Yes....I spent some time with Chemistry in school, if you can't tell.

I did a couple years of chemistry when I started my engineering degree (which I did not finish, got a masters in clinical psychology instead :coco: ), but we never discussed the method and madness of nitrous.

So I joined this forum for the answers that REALLY count! :D

I did re-ring/bearing this thing first, but it was so sloppy, the new stuff was "clearanced" pretty bad. I would only go 100-125 on your's, I only go that much on this since it has so much more cubic inches, on a smaller non-performance, high mileage with no rebuild small block, it won't hurt to be conservative. A buddy put 125 on his knocking Camaro (350) and all it did was knock louder! And go faster of course...

HMMMMMM  :hmmm: Wonder if its time to put my 150 (50-100-150) Nitrous kit, wires, lines, switches, buttons, wide open throttle switch, purge kit up for sale? :hmmm:

Mine used to say that....so I divorced her. :evilsmile

She only said it to cover the fact that she couldn't understand it herself. :bananaman

Speaking of chemistry class....you should have seen the look on my high school teachers face when I mentioned mixing brake fluid and pool chlorine. Priceless. :rofl2:
