I end up spening 10-15 minutes hunched down on my knees watching the gas go in at half-speed or slower, until I see it slosh at the back of the filler tube, then I stop. Gas typically splashes into my face and hands, and it inevitably gushes out onto my bumper and license plate. I try to wear sunglasses to keep it out of my eyes, but then I can't see as clearly and it always overfills. Is there a faster and safer way to do this with the new pumps? Ours do not have the accordian all the way down the nozzle, like in CA, just a rubber flap-ring at the top. I don't feel that I have to have it "topped off". Just want to fill it up without a major hassle.
Scott; sounds like a venting problem. You will have to either get a vented cap or follow the vent line and find out where it is crimped or stopped up. Good luck! Earl
vent line plugged/restricted. cap doesnt affect venting when pumping gas. but i still must pump half speed and positon nozzle at an angle to gas up. some of it is just the new pumps. i find putting nozzle at abound 4 oclock and holding it up so noz is as far down filler as possible works best. good luck.
dude i hear you my gas spills all the time.. it is worse with the 75 cuz it has the stupid unleaded fill tube. but i really don't think there is any way to do it. it always always over flows! so i have to only put like 5 gals at a time in it
I fixed the venting issue. The current problem is just the splashing around thing. I find that shooting toward the top back of the filler tube at half speed is pretty good if I put the nozzle only half way in, but I have to hunch down to watch when it gets full. I found one yesterday (hence the new thread) where it would click off as soon as I started letting it flow over 15-20%. So, I figured that if it was going to splash out anyway, I may as well just shove the entire nozzle in there, compressing the spring-loaded flap at the top, and punch it 100%. Of course, it filled up quickly, but I got a good handfull of gas when I took the nozzle out after it finally filled up and clicked off. Had to ask the attendant for a "moist towellette" to clean up. Trust me, fillig up a muscle car, and then being forced to say the words "moist towellette" to some girl behind the counter is quite embarrassing
I am considering altering the filler neck so that I can open the trunk and the filler neck, with the gas nozzle, is straight into the tank. I will keep the gas cap in place just to keep appearances. No more 15 minute pit stops for gas.
Hawko, good idea. Should be able to see the level before it comes splashing out onto your trunk carpet. I would guess you would have to have a good seal on the cap to prevent fumes from getting into the trunk and passenger areas, but shouldn't be too difficult to accomplish. Glad to know that everyone (except for Yellow72) are having similar problems. Yellow, how do you fill yours up without splashing all over?
You can run a small steel tube from the top of the filler neck inlet down into the tank to suffessfully vent it. This should keep the tank from burping while you fill it up. You can fill all the way to the top too. The tube should be the same length at the filler neck or slightly longer. My "how to" off the top of my head. 1) remove filler neck (and thoroughly clean with soap and water) 2) measure out a suitable length of brake line or similar steel line 3) bend steel line to follow the contour of the bottom of the fill neck. 4) insert the line into the fill neck and braze the steel line to the bottom of the fill neck inside of the the gas cap (so the cap will still seal the tank with the tube installed) Or just do like this guy did. http://www.myoldkar.com/neck.html Now that I think about it, if it's not a burping problem, I don't know if this will help. Well, it's worth a try anyway. hhhmmm... This is some good food for thought. Thought about it some more and the bottom end of the vent tube might need to be a little taller than the top of the gas tank. And you might want to run the tube along the top of the fill neck too. I don't know. I need to do some 'sperimentin' in the garage.
thats because you live in TENN they don't have them stupid rubber nossle thingys over the pump... gotta love the EPA.
I been haveing the same problem. I'm about convinced there is no way to fix it short of doing what Terry is doing. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=20799
I always had problems putting gas in my '75, not so much in my '72. The '75 had a restrictor in the filler neck to only admit the smaller unleaded nozzles. I replaced the filler neck with an unrestricted '74 filler neck. It is much eaiser to put gas in now.
That wouldn't work in my state (NJ). Believe it or not, I've had several inspections over the years where they actually test my filler neck to make sure it wasn't modified (enlarged) to allow the larger LEADED pump nozzles in. Yeah, I haven't seen a gas station in the tri-state area selling leaded gas in the past ten years, but the dumb-a**es still do that check. I really hate the NJ smog check system, by the way. Joe
