I don't have to remove my rear window yet, but at some point, I'm probably going to face it and wanted to do my homework before I actually have to cross that bridge. My car is 1976 Comet 4-door, and has been in my family since it was new. I'm dedicated to doing whatever it takes to keeping it in my family, so no, I wouldn't consider getting rid of the car. Yes, I also know that the 2-door and 4-door rear windows don't interchange, and unfortunately, Auto Krafters only produces the 2-door gasket. From what I can tell from looking at a Ford master parts number catalog, there never was a replacement weather strip even when the 4-door Maverick/Comet was new and the weather strip would have been a dealer item. The master catalog made some vauge reference to a butyl sealant kit, which sounds a lot like the generic kits I've seen in NAPA and Parts America stores. On a different Ford forum where this came up for a mid 60s Galaxie (where the rear window weather strip apparantly wasn't available, the consensus was that this type of kit would work as long as the window "frame" was large enough to support the glass directly (ie. the glass was large enough to sit on the metal edging directly without the support of the gasket). Has anyone with a 4-door Maverick/Comet had to remove and replace their rear window, and if so, how did you make out? If you weren't able to reuse your old gasket, did you use such a generic butyl sealant kit? Thanks, Joe
When I did my four door it was a long search till I found a useable used one.I might have a spare used one I would sell if ya need one but try to save your old one first .
It sounds like you are doing a lot research than I did. I mistakenly thought that the 2 and 4 door was the same and of course, they are not. By the time, I saw the light I had destroyed my old gasket and could not find one that was of any use. What I finally came up with after much searching was to buy (two) 2 door gaskets and use some gel superglue to make one gasket. I'm not sure it if will hold up as well as the original but I tried to pull apart a test section and could not separate them. To help everything hold together I glued the gasket to the glass with urethane adhesive.
That sounds like an interesting idea. I have a spare rear window in storage at home, maybe I'll invest in two 2-door gaskets and try it out. Do you remember where you cut the two to make a new one?
I ended cutting it about 4 inches from the bottom pasenger side corner and about 6 inches up the side. The 2 door rear window is slightly smaller than the 4 door.
