Hello, Iam on a long learning curve concerning Ford Mavericks. I want to build a road course car that is street legal. Need some tips on wheels and tires. Do you know of any maverick owners racing or running on road courses. Any tips you can help us with will be appreicated. We have a youth racing team and hope to run some hot laps in the future.
Welcome to the board Libby. There are lots of folks on here that have their cars turning and stopping very well. Mine is not one of them however so I really don't have any wisdom to impart. You've found the place with the answers for sure. The search button in the upper right corner of the page can help you find answers about wheels and tires as well as the suspension and brake modifications you'll need to survive on a road course. Good luck with your project. Take some pictures and post them here. We love looking at them!
there's definitely a couple of road race cars on here, however most of us racer types are drag racers. i'm sure someone will be along shortly to answer your questions. welcome to the board.
What type of road racing will you be doing? Pro or just local? I have done a local corse but it was just something a few clubs & performance shops put together. It was still fun & I learned plenty. Now I want more power, better gripping rubber, & some race pads for the brakes. I'm still working on all of that stuff but overall it handle okay. But I still have alot to learn, that includes how to drive better. If you need any help just ask, if I don't know the answer I will try to find out for you.
Thanks for the feedback. Streetrod77, I'll be setting up for Bever Run outside Pittsburgh,Pa. I hope to start out doing hot laps with the youth I work with through the Keystone SMILES Youth Racing Team. My brother is a older Ford lover and has one drag maverick and a stable of three other mavericks getting ready for this years events. He gives me a lot of help. He lives on the others side of the state. I am looking for anyone that currently races or that has some knowledge on tips for setting the maverick up for the road courses. Do have anything I can look at as a resource?
Ive learned a lil from old books and this forum to start the setup procedure on my dirt car. Ive got an old "Off highway parts" circa 1970 as these cars use mostly 70 Mustang front suspension. In this book they describe some pieces for the Trans Am 70 Mustang. It gives part numbers for the disc brake setup, though there are many aftermarket units out there that are probably better. They do give spring rates 720lbs front and 200 lbs rears and a 5/8 or 11/16 rear sway bar. Dont know actual weight differencs between mustangs and mavericks but might give you a place to start. They also talk about aluminum bushings for the front of the rear springs. I would assume doing the shelby relocation of the front upper control arms would also help I know it made a difference on my 64 Falcon, Guys is this still a good idea on the mavericks? Side note this book has a great lil article on building H/MP Maverick six, 300ci crank 240ci block....etc... Any body out there interested?
Sorry but I dont. I have 2 guys that does road courses with imports but nothing American made. Like I said, it was an open event, no pros. Just having a little fun. My car is not stock. For now i'm running 17x8 w/ 225/45 for the front & 18x10 w/ 295/35 in the rear Kumho MX tires. Front springs are about 500lbs or 550lbs but I cut them down a little to lower the car more. The rear suspension is completely home made. Rear leafs are mustang racing springs with a 2.5 inch drop. Also got them dearched another 1/2 inches because the 18 in wheels raised the car back up. I forgot the spring rate but it is stiff, very stiff. I also had subframe connectors made. KYB shocks all the way around but you will have to make to mounts for the shocks. I also relocated the shocks & added more of a pitch for side to side movement. I forgot to add that the stock gas tank was taking out & replaced with a por stock plastic tank in the trunk. There was a frame built for the tanks to sit in with the underside of the tank exposed so the lines coming out of the sump will already be under the car. The frame around the tank is a must for the tank to sit low in the trunk. I hope this help a little. I will try to find the company that sell the mustang racing suspension & get back with you. The rear is not a bolt in deal though.
I did a search for mustang suspension & found it. You can also read what other members put under there cars. The place is www.mustangsplus.com & www.globalwest.net
