 I recently got an 89 351w for my Mav. Will I be able to use the distributor that's on it with an ignition box or will I have to change it ?
    Thanks, Darrel

Never messed with the 351s but they do have a taller deck so my guess would be they are not interchangable.

I reread your post. Are you asking if the 302 dist will work in the 351? (no) Or are you asking if the 351 dist will plug into the electronic module? If you have a Ford Duraspark set up, the answer is maybe. Ford used the same module in different cars but there are about 3 different ones, The module with the blue connector is the most common.

:hmmm: I have an empty engine bay (was a 200). I bought a 351w and the distributor has a pigtail on it with 3 plug-ends. I'm changing the carb to eliminate the electronic crap on the carb. But I wasn't sure if I mounted a module and plugged the distributor in if it would work or do I have to change the distributor as well.

Most people use a late 70's Duraspark II setup ... not sure what would be required for an 89 dizzy .... is it Duraspark II?

The distributor is a Motorcraft and the pigtail on it says KEM. My Mav is a 69.5 and didn't have anything in it.

you have the 89 distributor? yeah it would run with that, you would have to patch intothe plug and use the start run wire off the key, green and yellow wire to the - coil, and you need a power wire. from the distributor, and to the coil, ran to a hot wire from the switch. 3 wires used off the distributor plug, power wire, start/run and the - side of the coil. you wont have any timing advance,,, would be a great setup with a MSD 6AL box with manual timing control. I'd bet it is a standard Duraspark set up. You can go to a junkyard and get the harness that will plug the module, dist, and coil together.

Someone told me I could get a box out of a Granada or similar vehicle, as long as the plugs matched and plug it in and it would work. Is this true or are there a bunch of mods to make ?

An 89 is a fuel injection distributor. It has a Hall Effects sensor (pip).
These generally will not fire a Dura Spark box and plus it has no ignition advance built in.
Your selections are to go back to a mid 70s to 80 351w dist. or a new MSD replacment or other make for the purpose, that has ignition advance built in.

No, the length is to short and the end to the oil pump drive shaft is to small.
Use 351w dist. only with Dura Spark pickup and centrifigal advance built in.
Get them out of larger cars and trucks of the period and pay attention to the length and oil pump drive size.
A point type can be used with a Pertronix conversion pick up or use 302 pick up and stator wheel for conversion.
