Ive been thinking of SEFI on my 69.5 with a 88 roller 5.0,,, at the moment, its carbed,,, does anyone have any links for a site that has the wiring schematics for a 88 t-bird computer, engine, wiring harness, etc etc?? Anyone ever made this swap? Thanks for any info! Chad
Please allow me to elaborate,, SEFI, is sequetial electronic fuel injection. I have everything from my 88 t-bird, distributor, wiring harness, fuel pump, computer etc etc etc. I think where Im going to have trouble is the wiring comming out of the fuse box onthe t-bird. there is 2 plugs, that will separate the wiring harness from the computer, my books dont get that specific on what the wiring that comes out of the fuse box that goes to the computer, everything else is a plug in deal,, Im going this route,, cause over the weekend, I was watching A show that put a ram 350 in a well a c worded car,, and I thought that was pretty neat, I want something a little more than a carb. I know the carb may infact take power away from a good tuned fuel injection system, and would super cool under the hood of a classic! I rebuilt the injectors and all the parts on the manifold itself, and Im ready to give it a try! any insight on how to help wire it all up in the 69.5 would be great! Would pay for a schematic for this swap! Chad
Here is a good place to start http://www.themotorbookstore.com/ford-fuel-injection-1988-1993.html In regards to the 2 wires a simple guess would be power with Key on and power with key off.
Go to Helminc.com They are by far the best book to get. I looked for an '88 wiring diagram, and they're currently out of stock. You might be able to get a CD ROM though. I don't know how similar a turbo wiring harness is, but you might be able to find one online at turboford.net. That's what I used to get the info for my '88 turbo bird. Anywho... Good luck with that! I got to where you're at with my dad's pinto before I moved out. As soon as my mom stops remodeling the house, I think dad will have enough time and money to finish it up.
I have bought manuals from them before. They were great. I've been looking for the last year for 93 mustang wiring dia. They were out of stock but I see they have them now. Thanks for the reminder.
I removed all the wiring harness today from the t-bird. its in pretty good shape. Imthinking Ill have to remove the fuse box too,, Im not sure just yet,, Off the main harness, from the computer,, there is 2 plugs that go into the firewall, lots of wires in those plugs,,, one is grey, and one is black, Im looking it up to see what it is to know if I even need that part of the harness. Hooking up the engine, and mounting the computer,, is a plug in job,, already have the O2 sensors inthe manifolds. Just gonna have to take a long long look at the schematics when I find em,, It may not be as bad as I think! Thanks guys! Chad
There's been a good deal written about it on here. A quick search on "EFI" came up with this thread: http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=19392&highlight=efi There's more around the board, but the guys have given you good advice. Pay particular attention to the fuel pump related wiring (speaking from experience). Good luck. -Rick
chad, the first thing, to start you off, is you chose a Speed Density control system. It works good, no question, but you will be told to go Mass Air by some one i'm sure. The "SD" system is a bit eaiser to install and get running well. Some other back ground is you need to learn all about fuel injection because you will be the expert on your own car after it's done. Installing the engine as it is and using all the sensors will be the easier way to go. The fuel pump will be a decision to make on how to make it work. A pickup truck external unit is the easier way in lue of trying an in tank assembly. Headers is another issue. The Heddmon shorties with small modification, will be just the ticket to get the OX sensors up close to the heads, in the head pipes. Go to www.fordfuelinjection.com. There you will find your beginning and many computer drawings but not full system drawings. This will make you think and learn to put all the elements togather. Good luck.
I did not know the trucks had external pumps! Thats going to help a bunch! Ive already got the exhaust manifolds on, with O2 sensors in place. I had a look at the website, that is some good info,, but your right,, not detailed enough to find what I need to know, but its close,,, it will be a speed density system, So, does this mean, ill have to run the electronic speedo on the tranny? if so, thats great, because I took the sensor off the AOD, and put it on the C4. gears and all and it was a direct swap out from the stock cable! Which trucks had the external pump? I know the older ones did not,, so it must be 90 or newer??? Chad
Which trucks had the external pumps? That would be good! No choppin up the stock tank, or swapping out,,, It is a speed density system,, I took the AOD speedo assembly, and fit it on the C4,,, I did not have a speedo cable, and I had to plug the hole with something ya know,,,, LOL! it worked!! Gears and all, so that has to be hooked up to tell the computer what to do right?? Chad
I'm not a huge fan of external pumps. They're generally quite a bit more expensive and louder than in tank pumps or they just don't flow enough. Just check the flow rate and make sure it's going to give you all the pressure you need before you buy it.
I dont mind a little noise. i called around today to local parts stores, found a inline pump (high pressure) for around 80 dollars. (advance auto) Napa wanted 125!!! I began sorting, and cleaning up the manifold, and fixing all the bad tape on the wiring harness. I was thinking about testin it all out on the floor while its off the car to get an idea on the power wires and grounds and other hookups I have to figure out. Basicly its not too complicated so far,,, Im still wondering what the 2 small plugs are, on the t-bird, (88) they were up by the master cyl going into the firewall,,, According to the book, the fuse box has no accesories, or fuses that run the computer. Im thinking they are for the dash guages, heat, amp, tach, cruise, AC, and the speedo. The harness itself, looks to have a large ground, that was on the kick panel of the t-bird, and the hotwires go to the solenoid with fusable links. If I get the 2 plugs figured out if they are indeed guages and etc etc, get a fuel pump and lines ran, It may just run after all!!! Would anyone like to see a photo of this harness complete?? ChadS
The 85 to 88 pickups trucks, Bronco II and Rangers have their high pressure pumps mounted on the frame and use a low pressure pump in their tanks. You don't need the low pressure pump when mouting the hi pressure pump back near the tank.. Mount the pump on it's bracket just ahead of the tank and modify the tank sender assembly for the high pressure feed to the pump. A better way is to install a sump because you will run out of fuel with low fuel, level on acceleration, using the original pickup location and assembly. NO, this pump does not make noise like the standard low pressure pumps. You may hear a low level whine but before engine starts up but that's the extent of it unless the pump is defective. You must run both feed and return lines. The feed must be able to handle min of 100 psi, so alum. line with suitable connectors are the way to go. The stock Ford external pumps flow 88 l/hr at up to 40 psi. This is enough fuel volume for nearly 300 hp, more than enough for a stock 5L FI engine. In my signiture I run a stock pump and FMU feeding a Kenne Bell blower with stock 19 lb injectors on the Mark VII SD engine. I have a c4 behind FI and have the original TV cable as a kickdown for the c4 using a custom made lever assembly on the c4 control shaft.
Thanks Bluegrass! my t-bird called for 39psi, I already have a low pressure electric pump close to the tank. So, could I put the high pressure pump closer to the engine? Im going to pick up new lines for the feed and return, would 3/8 be too big? The fuel line has to be able to withstand 100psi,,, but that would be on the outlet side of the pump, correct??? Could the inlet be used with a less grade hose (not some cheap .99 hose or anything)to feed the high pressure pump? Im thinking my low pressure pump is 7 psi. Basicly a stock fuel injection set up from a 88 t-bird, What about a inline filter? How bout inbetween the 2 pumps? Also, My wiring harness for the computer is pretty basic,,, the hot wires are there with fusable links, ground was by the computer, where would I pick up the speedo sensor?? From the 2 plugs I mentioned before??? They were located up close to the master cyl, and gone into the firewall. or, do I need that electronic speedo sensor on the tranny? Thanks once again! Chad
PS, I have everything from the T-bird as far as sensors are concerned, everything off the t-bird is now in the maverick, engine, serpentine belt, A/C, high amp alternator, and the new style distributor. I used the fuel injected distributor for now, and wired it up to run so I can move the car around. It starts well, but without the computer, its dead on timing,,, nothing there to change it. I loved how the engine ran in the t-bird, never missed a lick! But its not right now,,, its gota be the distributor not changing timing, what it will do is,, when it cold starts, it acts as if the timing is off,, then when I let it run for a while, it changes and smooths out,,, does it everytime It starts cold, but once warmed up its fine. I did change the plug gaps, (tighter) that helped,, but I noticed when it was still in the t-bird, when it was cold, it done the same thing, till the computer recognized it was running and changed the timing off of base timing. Hope this makes sence,, Chad
