Could anyone list their exact combos of their maverick's or comet's and tell what they will run in the 1/4 mile if possible. Please include the rear gear,heads,carb,exhaust, and rear tires. I am sure I am not the only one who would like to see this update. Being a former chevy owner,all of my buddies want to SPANK my maverick so they say. And one of them has an LS1 Z28 that runs 12.90's @ 109. And he is talking about putting nitrous on the car, so I may have some trouble beating him. Well I hope some of you post your specs. '75 mav 351w SRP 14.2:1 pistons, Victor Jr heads (out of the box) custom length pushrods, Comp Solid roller .672 lift 266 @ .050" duration, double roller timing set, HV oil pump, stock cast crank, Eagle H-beam 4340 rods stock length, K-motion springs 1.55 OD 210 closed 590 open, titanium keepers and retainers, Lunati (the last of the best stud-mound rockers ever made!) lightweight aluminum roller rockers, Vic Jr intake ported to match the heads, 830 custom carb (built by me) w/annular boosters & 4 corner idle, Jets are LF 75 RF 73 LR 77 RR 75. Plugs are motorcraft ASGF32C gapped @ .050". Wires are by Jacobs. MSD 6AL ign box w/ pro-billet distributor. Powerglide trans w/5000 stall (footbrakes 46-4800) custom steel driveline 9" rear w/Daytona pinion support 4.57 gear, Moser 33 spline axles turning 28x10.5-15 MT ET Drags. Best time in the 1000' was 8.50 @ 119, 60' was 1.388. Now the turbo maverick...its a smooth-idle street car, only ran it once...but burned 6 plugs off @ 20 feet out. Still ran a 1.68 60' and I tried to make a run of it...on 2 cylinders and no boost. Left the line w/2 psi showing on the gauge. Basically a stock bottom end w/ forged SRP low-comp pistons, 0 deck, ported 351w heads and a RPM intake. Cam is almost stock (great for turbos). I have seen over 25 psi with it once...but the drivers side head gasket didnt' like that too well. I figure when I add an intercooler it should be capable of nearly 700 HP with more tuning. Right now I keep it at 3-5 PSI via Turbonetics Racegate, plenty of power to get you in trouble---yet not so much as to fry the tires at any speed. Turn it up to 10 psi, and when it spools at around 2500, it will cook 'em at any speed in any gear. Got crossed up on the freeway one day trying to race a bike, so it's kinda dangerous. more info on the turbo car is on my website.

As always this is only my 2 cents Steve I'm sure everyone here is ready to help you any way we can but you are looking at a lot of time and work to get your Mav or Comet into the 11+ 1/4 mile range, I know this first hand. If you can afford it do the best 408 stroker kit for a 351 winsdor you can find, the AFR heads, 800 holley, big roller cam and roller everything else, 5000 stall, well build C4, 9 inch with at least a 411 gear and spool, the hooker headers 6802 I think it's the one for the mustang swap, victor jr intake and the biggest F#$King bottle of laughing gas you can find. Then go find this sumbitch and weld his doors shut. Hope this helps, but if it doesn't you could always ask Dennis if you could borrow his Sprint and I'm sure it could do the JOB. Thanks, But I need to stick w/ a 302-331 if possible. I know I am not going to be able to beat the LS1, but he has a lot more money in his car than I do,1500 vs 26,000. Maybe I will be able to beat him w/o the spray if I get the right combo.
Re A 302 or 306 will do it easy, The 4.62 gears will work my friend has 4.88s in his street car. On the bottle its going to turn some rs though. Here is a cheap way to do it. Get a Roller motor out of a 87-90 Mustang, Fly cut the pistions, put rings and bearing in it. Solid cam comp cams 282s should work, Your going to need aftermarket heads. Afr 185s, tw trick flow, Victor jr, That should run low 12s at least off the bottle. Run as tall a slick as you can. You want at least a 3500 stall if you want it to run the best.
Darracq, I hope you are right, my friend has a shortblock out of his 89 mustang. He pulled it out @60,000 miles exactly in trade for a 331 to put his powerdyne on. The car didn't go any faster either. It has the cam from the holley systemax in it. Thanks Steve.
12.90's? Please!! You can take that with a stock 87-93 302 roller block (in GOOD condition) a good set of aftermarket heads, a good intake, a good rear end and a 200 shot of NOS or a supercharger. The maverick weighs very little to begin with, much less than a camaro, just further lighten the car and build onto a good roller block. I once saw someone run a bone stock maverick with a 2 bbl bone stock, 302 mav in the late 14's. Good luck! and have fun
Re Cityboy. I dont know anything about FI and i would never run it. Here is the specs on my buddys mav 72mav. 302 flat top KB pistions, victor jr intake, edel 750 carb, victor Jr heads out of the box, Hedman 1 5/8 headers, Herbert Roller cam and lifter 242/250 i think. .618 .640 lift. Chevy 5.556 400 rods. c4 4000 stall. 4.88 gears. Shifts at 7300. Car runs 11.0s With a solid cam and a little less compression it should still run i the 11s.
Simple...I run a 040 over 351w in my '71 grabber. It features 9.7:1 comp from a set of forged TRW dished pistons along with a Comp Cams 274 extreme energy cam and roller tip rockers, as well as a set of modified '70 351w heads with 1.94 in and 1.60ex as well as unshrouding the exhuast valves. It alo uses a stock electronic dist which has been recurved and fired by a complete MSD system. The intake is a Offenhouser duel-port and toped by an AED modified holley 750dp. the trans has a stage 2 shift kit and a 2800 stall convertor, the rear is a 9" with a 4:11 detroit locker...the cars has run 12:78 @111mph in the quarter without nitrous...with I expect mid to high 11s. the car is very streetable and fun to drive
71 302 bored .30, Keith Black 115 pistons, Childs & Albert Zero gap rings (I do not recomend these rings), Stock rods & crank, windage tray, ARP bolts, Comp Cams hydraulic roller .566/.576 gross lift, 232/240 duration @ .50, Comp Cams Pro Magnum roller rockers on 7/16 studs, AFR 185's, ported, polished and milled, to yeld 10:1 compression, Eddlebrock RPM Air Gap manifold, Speed Demon 650 carb. I am running electric fan & fuel pump, none on engine. All MSD ignition, Hooker Comp headers, Dr Gas X pipe, 2 chamber Flow Masters, All exhaust 2 1/2" after collector, Top Loader 4 spd, 9" with detriot locker, 31 spline axles and 3:89 gears. I havent raced yet but it dynoed at 303 rear wheel hp which is about 370 flywheel. All the calculaters I've checked with should make this a mid 12's car.

I'll probably blast down the track for the first time at the Roundups. Traction will definately be a problem. I might have to buy a set of slicks to play with it and see what it will really do.
damn im just anxious to see them purty white quarters all covered with nice sticky rubber lol and as far as combinations go, you guys have offered ALOT of different options and most of which will do the trick!! mine a little different, 347 Eagle forged rotating assembly stuffed inside a Mexican block tided together with a Pacific main girdle, flat top pistons (around 10.0to 1) Crane solid roller cam 250-260 and .599" lift, Victor Jr. heads (box stock) Super Victor intake with a 850 cfm carb, flowing threw a set of 1 3/4" hookers, 3000 stall Coan converter, C4, 9" with a set of 4.11's and a 175 shot of spray, 275/60 BFG DR's good enough for 11.03 on drag radials and exhaust on motor, and a traction limited 10.41 (1.62 60') drop the mufflers and bolt the slicks on it went a 9.99 (1.42 60' w/o trans brake) on the sauce...
Damned impressive numbers Purple. Sounds real close to my set-up - ...that I haven't cranked yet. I've got the AFR 185 heads instead. Solid lifters, Holley Systemax II ported Intake 36# injectors and ...all the laff gas I can put to it. BTW, what's your race weight? Also, what was your your mph on that 9.99 run? You got a 10 pt. cage and a chute????
