Not worried enough about the fluid to mess with it any more. With the leak I have had over the past 3 years, and constantly having to add fresh to top it off, it has probably been replaced 2 or 3 times already :16suspect I will just add the 3-5 qts, "bleed" it, top it off and go.
Don't add any additives to the typeF, just use straight castrol typeF. It worries me that you had such a bad leak, if the fuid level ever got a little too low it could have started to send the tranny to an early grave.
If I let it sit for a week or so, I would lose about a 1/2 cup or so. So I always knew how much I had lost, and kept an eye on it to keep it full. I probably lost a little while driving, since I have a fine mist underneath, but I never let it get too low that it would have gotten dangerous. It didn't leak enough that it left any more than one or two drops in a parking area, if even that much. Usually, it would not leave any, unless I parked on the wrong side of the street and all the fluid sloshed to the driver side.
i wouldnt see a problem with mixing the fluids.. but it is best to drain the old... if there is no drain plug, then you will have to take the tranny out, remove the torque convertor and drain it manually.... if this isnt feasbile.. just add the castrol... glad to hear you got it... the true fun is about to begin... good job
there is a way to drain the converter with it in the car, it requires you to jack the front of the car WAY up in the air and let it gravity drain as you rotate the flywheel/converter. It is a big pain in the buttox and I don't recommend it unless it is absolutely necessary.
When you had the valve body out most of the oil was drained out of the convertor. Did you notice that a whole lot more fluid came out after the valve body was loosened/removed? I believe it drains back through the convertor feed passage.
Yep, valve body came out and I got a face full. Ever notice how bad tranny fluid tastes. Luckily it does not burn the eyes too bad.
Ha! ha! Sorry, but that was funny! I haven't tasted it that I can remember, but I've had it all in my hair and clothes. The worst I've had in my hair or clothes is gear oil. That stuff(or the smell of it) is the toughest thing to try to get rid of.
only about half the fluid will drain out of the converter on its own.....not that it's a big deal......
Carb cleaner and gas are about the worst things I have ever got in my eyes. Multiple 4 letter words were yelled.
I agree, Jamie. Those and acetone...pretty much anything flamable. I would take trans fluid anytime. By the way, anyone who is keeping track of this project, it didn't work. 1st to 2nd is a little better shifting than before, but 2nd to 3rd has, what I guess you all call "flare"...a half second or so of revving/slipping before engaging in gear. I will just have to buy a real shift kit.
If the transmission was in questionable shape when you made the mod, it may have just finished it off for you. Hard to say at this point but that should have made it shift quite hard. You won't be that impressed with what you get in a "real" shift kit.
you guys should try being covered head to toe in Methy Ethyl Ketone that was warmed up before it came out of its container to blast you. im so glad im in I.T. now... scooper, that stinks, hope you get it figured out.
I don't think the trans was in questionable shape. It has low miles, and never gave me any problems other than that leak (which I fixed during all this). The only thing I am questioning is the position of that valve that they tell me to take out and put back in backwards with the spring following. I did what the pictures and instructions said, but now that valve does not move, as it goes in and just bottoms out before you put the clip back in to hold it down. It seems that it should still move.
before taking it back out, I would try re-adjusting the intermediate band to see if that helps with the 2-3 shift.
