hey guys can someone please tell me how to get the rear hub off was going to check brakes while i had rim off for body work but its stuck ive hit and pulled but still wont come off any ideas would be great thanks tommyboy
I had a similiar situation happen to me a little while back...remove all wheel lugs(DONOT tighten...only run in a few threads each),spray with a good penetrating oil(I used PB Blaster),start engine to move car back and forth a few feet....movement of the car prvides weight as well as letting the oil move about.I spent close to a half hour just removing the wheel.Good Luck
Do you mean the drum is stuck? If so, spray it down with PB Blaster around where it fits over the center of the axel and whack it good with a rubber mallet a few times. I had the same problem with my mom's 2002 Taurus when I put new brake shoes on the rear.
Sometimes there are two threaded holes that you can run a couple of bolts into (evenly, with a couple of turns each), which will force the drum off the hub. Not sure if the mav has them. Mine came off using Jamie's suggestion.
I'm sorry....I wrote about a stuck wheel,aluminum-mags and road salt do not mix....For the brake drum itself,Again use a good penetrating oil(PB Blaster or Kroil)even spray it around each lug stud...you'll probablly have to use the little stick that comes with the can. Take a hammer and hit the hub between each lug stud.If still won't budge, spray again and get a BFH(big f***ing hammer) Good Luck
i had the same problem... its not that it was stuck... but a spring had broken and the shoe had worn a groove into the drum and then they locked together i had to take a screwdriver and hit the back side of the drum to finally get them apart.. drum got messed up.. so i bought both rear drums new and new shoes and new brake hardware.. and then new wheel cylinders.. might as well do it all.. hehehe do whatever it takes to remove it... spray wd-40 or lube of some sort.. and just pay with it... loosen it.. then hit it back into place.. then pull out a little.. then press back in... just to work all the rusted parts loose enough to get it off.. good luck
I've also had to take a small screwdriver and back off the brake shoe adjuster.....You will probally need brakes or a srinpg like .. ..said.Good luck
Spray the center of the drum where it meets the axle senter hub with some PB Blaster. The hit the out side of the drum witha rubber mallet or dead blow hammer. Hit the drum on the outside(not where the wheel sits)on sever places turn the drum while you hit it. You may have to back off the adjusters, but the drum will move a little before it hangs up on the shoes.
with mine, I had to use the auto adjuster and loosen the shoes. They would not let the drum come off. The alternative is to really yank the hell out of it and break stuff. There are several things that can cause the drum to stick.
Most of the time it's stuck like that is due to the grooves like stmanser said and if that's the case you need to get the adjusters backed off if possible and beat the heck out of the drum as you try to turn it...and I'm not talking rubber mallet here. you need a BFH. I haven't seen one I couldn't get off yet but I have had some I spent 20 minutes getting it off.
