Well, everybody's got an opinion and everyone is entitled to it.....I had one of those exact purolator pumps on my comet when I was in college, had it on there for about a week. I was in college and didn't have any money....well, not for car parts anyway . I mounted it on the firewall and it wasn't really all that loud, it would just give out under full throttle. The bowls in the holley carburetor would dry up after I was in it for a little while.....just couldn't keep up....acutally I think I still have that thing down there in the tool box somewhere.
rick, maybe im the d@ss cause i aint followin. i was agreeing that they are great for street use. i use the lower pressured one on a big block for towing and such. i cant imagine the big flow one not being able to keep up with an NA small block...of course that could be my d@ss lacking imagination.
I don't think any of you are dum**sses, I was just giving my experience. I switched to a mechanical pump and it cured the problem, then later went to a paxton pump mounted in the rear. The purolator pump that I was running looked like a little 3"x3" box, I remember seeing them in all the parts stores but with different labels on them.
oops I got you were agreeing Sierra. I was lumping you in with me in that we didn't know we needed to spend 10 times the money. Just funnin with the dumb ass thing. I will add that my stock carb setup on the cougar has the little ford thumb sized filter attached right to it. Turns out there are two of these that look identical except for output hole size and someone had put the small hole one on. That did affect acceleration, and had nothing to do with the pump, although the symptom was lack of gas. Any restriction will do the same thing.
I do know that fuel requirement is based on the engine and most mathematical equations i've seen base the requirement off of what the expected horsepower of the motor will be. They also take into account line size and the pumps GPH (gallons per hour) of flow at a given pressure. A long time ago I did the calculations and per the equation my car was a little over what that little pump would put out. Then I made a bunch of changes to the motor and replaced the stock mechanical pump with an edelbrock high flow pump, I think it was like a $130 dollar mechanical pump. I also installed a fuel pressure gauge on the cowl, at full throttle the pump would slowly start to loose pressure eventually falling to zero. I then upgraded to a bigger fuel line and the paxton pump, all the fuel supply problems went away then. Once again, just stating my experiences with fuel supply problems. And I figured us North Carolinians would be considered hicks before anyone in AZ......?
I have only had experience with Holley blue pumps. They keep up just fine. They can be heard a bit when the car is running. They are down right loud when on the firewall. They seem 'good enough'. However, I am one to like mechanical music. My car is like a symphony to me. Mechanical cam, Pete Jackson, Rattler dampner, and Holley blue would be an awesome performance to me! I never kept a radio in my 75, cuz the engine was entertainment enough. If the show got a little long, the toploader had a couple other channels to choose from. Dave
Ratio, I agree about the radio...Mine idles and drive with a nice "harmony" that sort of fades in and out with an even tempo. I love that. Besides, if I had a radio, it would have to be tremendously loud to hear over the engine.
lol..i dont have a radio in mine... i took it out to put in my wife's blazer... i dont need a radio though... engine is soo loud i had to crank the stereo up.. and then the speakers arent worth a crap so its all distorted... not worth it all i checked to see where angleton was.. to see if we are close enough to visit... hahaha.. other side of texas... nah.. cant drive that far.. lol did you ever rejet the carb scooper? and how is the fuel pump project coming?
LOL you two are freaks....Oh wait, I roll down the windows during the summer in my AC equipped Mustang just to hear the exhaust I love being a freak...
Freak It Is!!! I have this hyper-active, ADHD habit of humming and tapping my hands to music that is not there...drives the wife, parents, and anyone else in the car CRAZY!!! So, I sit at red lights with my lopey motor, tapping the steering wheel and rocking my head to MY MUSIC Who needs a stereo when the music is what comes from the makings of your own hands? Besides, that motor has a much better beat than most of the music nowadays... ST...the fuel system upgrade is on hold until I mess with the trans a bit, and then put a fuel pressure guage on my current pump. I think my problem is electronic, not fuel. Let ya know when I do.
