The gt40 only came on the Lightning trucks and the Cobra Mustang. The gt 40p came on the explorer. 1985 was the first year of the roller, although some 84 lincons and crown vic. came with the roller block. some trucks did not recieve the roller till late 80s. The only way i know to tell if its a roller motor is to remove a push rod. They are alot shorter than a flat tappet block, But some roller blocks were put out with flat tappet, So the only way to tell for sure is to remove the intake and look for the roller retainer holes.

If you can be more specific, what am I looking for for the roller retaining holes?
I've got a late model block, I'm not sure...

In the lifter valley there will be 2 drilled and tapped holes which hold the spider assembly.

I would think that Ford revised the part number when they went to the roller block?

I'm glad you'll cleared this up, I got lost with this one & I have GT40 heads off of a cobra. I'm glad I didn't get the block.
