i dont have a digital camera so i have no idea how to show anyone.. but the center scetion is out of the rear end in the back yard.. after looking at it i have a question.. im not sure this is an 8 inch ... the ring gear looks right.. but there is a guide pin on the front of the pinion that is in the center section.. and the new pinion that i have to put in, does NOT have a guide pin on the flat section where the teeth are... is the guide pin more of a slip on piece.. or is it a necessary part on the pinion... the guy that is doing the rear end, thinks that the rear end i have in the backyard might be a 9inch, from hearing my description. if anyone has pictures of a center section WITH gears installed, please post them or email them to me... if i havea 9inch.. i need to get dif gears.. or this rearend might not even be a ford.. i have only ever had one rear end built before and a shop did it all for me.. so i am lost.. thanks
thats great.. thanks my third member has the "rain"shield over the yoke.. and it looks like a 9 inch doesnt have that... so it appears it is an 8 inch thanks for the link maverick1970
If you can get a socket with extension onto the bottom bolts that hold the center section onto the housing, and get it straight on them, it is an 8". If there is 1 of those bottom bolts that will not line up straight and you need a regular wrench to get it out, it is a 9" This is another good site for info and pictures. http://www.kevinstang.com/Ninecase.htm
That shield is used in both applications - 8 and 9 inch - just as in the above pictures. I'm not really following what parts you are looking at, but if you go to that web page in that post, it has a bunch of pictures.
ok... with the center section out... looking straight on the ring gear... i look at where the pinion gear is at (on the inside in case you arent following).. there is a "guide" pin on the flat edge of the pinion gear that sets INTO a cast on the inside of the case.. the new pinion i got does NOT have a guide pin on the flat spot of the pinion.. it is flat.. with 3 holes in line... one in dead center of the pinion and one on each side. if anyone has pics of the inside with ring and pinion gear in.. of an 8inch and a 9inch.. this will help out a lot.. thanks for the pics so far edit: i just looked at the page that acorn posted.... i think i have a 9inch...i am going to double check when i get home tonight
I think I know what you are asking about now. On the front of the 8" AND the 9" pinion there is a pinion support that rides in a bearing pressed into the case. The 8" bearing is smaller then the 9". Here is a shot of the bearing in a 9" case. And here is a shot of a pinion (again, both 8" and 9" have this support). I think the pinion you have is an 8.8" - they do not have this support as part of the pinion. Here is an 8.8" from ebay. I do have both an 8" and a 9" out and sitting in my shop right now, if you do need any other pictures. At the moment it is 6 below zero ( and that is not the bogus wind chill either) so my camara might freeze up, but I would try if need anything. Eric J
ok.. i measured the ring gear... it is 8" from outside edge of the gear to outside edge of the gear. and the pinion is flat like the 8.8..but the center hole on my pinion is about a 1/4" and the two smaller holes are about 3/16" if memory serves me.. the back of the gear housing has the bump that is offset... i might be wrong... but i kinda remember the hump... thats a 9inch? right? im going to track down a digital camera..
ok.. i took the center chunk to the car wash and hosed it down... the bottom bolts ARE accessible... so it is an 8inch.. and the back of the housing is rounded with 2 dimples... yay.. now i just have to get the new gears... the ones i got seem to be 8.8 inch gears..
Yes and no on this one. See Ford made like 27 different rear ends for their cars and trucks, and about half are variations of the 9" housing and center section. Some 9" have the hump and others are just plain rounded like the 8". Some have dimples, some do not. Axles are another whole thread - the whole 28 spline 31 spline, dimples vs slots, tapered and non tapered ....... you almost need a complete book just to cover all the variations .....
the pinion that i got from ford_motorheads looks just like this..except it does not have the guide pin.. so it looks like i am back to square one and in need of a ring and pinion gear.. junkyard searching next week.. all week.. until i find a center section with the gears and trac lok in it already.. please.. some of you guys that have good luck finding stuff.. send me some luck.. PULEASE! heheeh
If you are looking for a factory 8" traction lok, you will need good luck! I've found only one in many many years of junking. Good Luck Good Luck Good Luck
mine was "squarish" in a round sort of way...lol yeah.. i am sure its an 8inch now... which is fine,... except the gears are a 2.78 i have a 2.89 in it now... and i want a 3.5 range gear... the 3.45 gears i have look like 8.8 gears.. so if anyone wants to trade 8.8 3.45 gears for an 8 inch 3.45 - 3.75 gear... i am ready to swap...
many of th early mustang IIs come equipped with 3.40 gears from the factory. The 4 and 6 cylinders had higher numerical values. The door code will usually indicate which rear is in there. Nice thing about this option is you wouldn't need to setup the rear. Take the third member out of the mustang, clean it up and install it. Try this site http://www.mustangii.org/decoder/axle/
