Hello all, I became a member here just a day ago. I have always been a maverick guy from the days I was in elementary and my old man bought his first 1976 Maverick for almost 12K pesos. It was a simple 2 Door, v-8 4 speed on the floor and the only option was "remote sport mirrors." It was bought from a dealer in Azcapotzalco Mexico City. With time I grew up and asked my old man not to sell the Mav until I could buy it. He sold it. Life went on and I inmigrated to the USA and in one ocation I went to visit for Christmas and we started talking about my younger years. The Maverick came to our conversation and he said that he never realized how much the car meant for me, for I was a kid when I mentioned I would buy it from him. I came back from vacation and the following year as me and a family of my own now has for many years, we went again to visit relatives and of course my Dad. As we embraced he went on to show me in the back yard a bulk covered under a tarp and asked me: Guess whats under the tarp? I said it looked like a car. He uncovered and it was a Maverick but it was not any Maverick. It was MY MAVERICK! With a lot of use and abuse but with the bill of sale showing my fathers name as the first buyer.Gave it to me and said it was not much left of it but he went thru the effort of locating it and bought it back just for me. I got it and it has been 3 donor cars 4 years and almost 10K dollars ago my Mav will come home this Christmas. I will post photos of it when I bring it to the US of America! Grettings from the Rocky Mountain Range in COLORADO USA!!!
Wow great story! Sounds like you have a good father, and a nice car. I hope to pass one of, or both of my Mavericks to my son some day. Welcome to the board, and to the U.S.A.
So V8 4 spds. were available in Mexico? That's interesting. I wonder what model lines there were, Grabber, base, LDO? Seth
to the board. Enjoyed your story. Sounds like you have a great father. Looking forward to seeing the pictures.
Super Story!!! I know 4 speeds were available in Mexico. Does it still have it in there? I would be curious as to what 4 speed they used. Good luck with the project & keep the updates comming.
I live in Aurora CO. and yes they made 4 speed v-8 Mavericks in Mexico. The car I have came originally with a 4 speed transmission made by Tremec and I believe it to be a T-4 judging for the numbers on the outside wall of the "gear box". It is still there in the car. They made 2 doorand 4 door Mavs with almost no options and almost all of them been V-8's with 3 speed trannies on the column and 4 speed for the 2 door model as an option only and just a handful of automatics. I heard that towards the last Mavericks made in 1977 some got a V-6 in them from the assembly plant in Cuautitlan Izcalli Mexico and I know this since one of my cousins was an assembly line Manager. This cars are extremly rare even in Mexico. My Maverick now has heating and defroster thanks to a US donor Mav. We made the bumper mod. to that of a 72 model and it was hard but worth it. This Mexican Mavericks bodies are much lighter that the US counterparts and prone to crashes due to many factors including driving habits and road conditions in Mexico. The car has created a cult almost as strong as the Mustang following here in the States, but due to average income only a very few cars are in a pristine show quality. None the less, owners are proud of their "toros" (Spanish for Bull) and join several classic car clubs to show and brag about them. And tru be told this cars do have some but kicking power even on poor quality Mexican gasoline. I got one picture of my Mav from the days it was in the pain process and I hope I can load it here. Merry christmas all! Julio
