On the new transmission that will be going in my '72, the shift lever is set up for a floor shifter or something. My shifter is on the colum. How do I go about putting the one off my old transmission on this transmission? I have tried about everything and I can't figgure out how to get it off? Someone told me I would have to remove the valve body. I don't know what a valve body is. I don't have any experience with the internals of transmissions... I am currently disassembling the old burned up transmission out of my '74 to see if I can figgure it all out.
Jamie, That looks like the kick down rod connection. I don't know what else would be different on a column shift car. I thought they would be the same since floor shifts used the shift interlock mechanism in the column. I tossed the rods that connected it (lock) years ago. I didn't know that it moved on the column until I put a tach on mine, wired it up and goosed the throttle and thought: 'Cool!' Then I shifted it in gear and the tach dropped down on the side of the steering column! Seth
No, the transmission doesn't have a kickdown lever. That lever there is something that someone has fabbed up. I got the transmission from Scrapper60, maybe he'll chime in and let us know what that lever was for. That being said, I just got finished putting a normal lever on. Wasn't as hard as I thought. Just take the pan off, take out some more screws on what I assume was the valve body, then take the nut off on the inside of the arm. 120 inch pounds was ok to torque the valve body bolts to, correct? Thats the number my 1971 vintage Chiltons manual gave me. The original transmission from my '74 that burned up back in June had obvious problems. The drum thing in it was all scored real bad and there was pieces of red paper like stuff in it everywhere.
Jamie ... you need to drop the pan and valve body and remove the nut to swap the shift levers .... tranny bolts ... tight as you can get them with a rachet ... no need to go crazy ...
Yea, I got it all taken care of. Thanks. Well, it's 5:00 AM and I'm back in NC. I brought my computer up here with me which makes this dial up internet a little more bearable over my grandpa's ancient Pentium 166 system. I'm about to head out and start pulling the engine out of the '74. Kind of sad knowing this will be the last time it moves under it's own power for possibly years... I put 11,582 miles on the car since I got it street legal on April 25th. It's been fun. Looks like I'm going to be pulling an engine swap in the snow. Fun.
