I use the fel-pros from autozone for a 88 mustang 5.0. They have never given me any problem. Sorry dont remember the part #
I've heard these are good: http://www.percyshp.com/seal4good.html I would use header gaskets from Jeg's before trying any manifold gaskets.
Lots of good suggestions...I finally got under the hood and pulled #4 plug wire while running, no change...it ended up being #3. Noise stopped as soon as the plug was pulled. I will try to order a set of gaskets this week. May work on the spot where the headers rub on the inside of that fender wall also, while I am taking them off.
when I call a parts store for gaskets, usually AutoZone....I asked the first question..."Do you carry Fel-Pro gaskets"? Fel-pros "PermaSEAL"should do just fine.....
yes they are very good for headers!!! better then any fel pro header gaskets out there! since were on the subject of gaskets.. fel pro and mr gasket does make one killer one piece oil pan gasket!
Since we are on the subject, I used a fel-pro one-piece oilpan gasket. Tightened it too much, it began to leak. Tightened it a bit more, leaks worse now. Now, I lose about a quart a month. Not a fel-pro issue, but user error. Maverick Man, it that picture taken on the way up to Big Bear?
When I bought my header gaskets, I just asked the sales guy if I could go back there and look through his stock. It was Saturday morning and he was hung over, so he accomodated me after I sent him back and forth a couple of times. The thicker and more metalic the gasket, the better. I've reused mine for about 4 rebuilds and never had a leak. That's with the cheap hedmans too. Use either the 1/4" thick copper or aluminum collector gaskets and make SURE you tighten down the three bolts evenly. If those flanges aren't lined up right, no amount of gasket is going to keep them from leaking. If it is the gasket that leaks, there will be a very visible black mark on the gasket where the exhaust was escaping. Sometimes a lifter that is going bad will make that same noise and go away as you rev the engine/ build oil pressure.
Ok you cheapass, wino-ricer. If you use a Fel-Pro gasket be sure you place a thin layer of high-temp (the red stuff) silicone sealer around each port on both sides of the gasket. Never had a problem with them after that. If you use the Percy's type copper gasket then you should install them dry. Be sure and retighten the header bolts after a couple of heat cycles. Next time ask before you do something like that. As for the oil pan.....clean the leaking area with brake cleaner and then try coating the area with black silicone sealer. It's ugly but sometimes it works. Otherwise....pull the pan and do it again.
YES SIR!!! But, I need to be able to take them off and on, for spark plug access. So, can I skip the red sauce?
No. Figure out another way to get the plugs out. If you just have to remove them for plug access then I'd highly suggest the copper Percy's units.
Scott; I used the dead soft aluminum header and reducer gaskets. Never had a leak since, and I have taken the headers off twice, and they still are good. A bit pricey, but well worth it.
