Is there a 9inch off any other car that is a straight bolt-in for a '75 Comet? Don't wanna go the custom rear axle route.

    Thanks, LDO

65 - 70 Mustang, Granada, or Lincoln Versilles rear will bolt right in but good luck finding one.

I sold one on ebay 3 months ago, paid 200 for the car and sold the rear for 475. on buy it now.

There was one at a local junkyard about 6 months ago I could call if you want me to.

    9 inch housing on E-bay

There is one on E-bay right now.
    That is the housing only.
Seller says it is 52.5 drum to drum.
I am not sure that my current 8 inch is that
    wide.
Anyone know what the factory 8 inch is supposed
    to be drum to drum?

The Versillies goes in with a little custom set up but is the closest you can come to bolt in and get the pinion angle and shock setup right. You will need to consider that the braking system has to be set up correctly or braking won't work right. This comes about from changing from drum to disc and the swept braking area etc. You could get into rear lockup or to little braking.
The concern is the new front to rear brake bias that needs to be accomplished.
If you need more info on it, be happy to help you with more insight.

    My two cents.

    Here we go again!

Now unless you want disc brakes, have 400+ ponys or just like saying you have a Ford 9 inch under your Maverick you are wasting money.

First, you can buy a disc brake setup for the Ford 8 inch.
Second, it takes a lot and I do mean A LOT of horses to break a 8 inch rear.
Third, the extra wieght you'll be carrying is about 100lbs
Fourth, you can get a posi unit for a 8 inch and most of the junkyards still have some gear ratio's to chose from.

This is a pix of my Maverick last year leaving the starting line with a Ford 8 inch rear, Auburn Diff, stock axles and 411 gears.

Pretty damn strong wouldn't you say!

As always this is just my two cents

A stock Comet/Maverick 8" rear is 56 1/4" mounting surface to mounting surface and the spring perches are 42 3/4" center to center.

My car has a 1957 (58/59s are the same also)ford rearend I cannot remember the width ,but it is a bolt in and works great.
I think the overall width is a little narrower than the factory one.

I am with BossMav!! The 8" is plenty strong. Dad was the only one to ever break one that I know of...and that was after 10 years of abuse on and off the track. Good luck either way you go!
